raccoons harassing my chickens

Last night I had two raccoons were harassing my chickens. The cage is enough to keep them out. So what is the justification for killing one of them versus live trap. I know they will be back. There where not scared of me in any shape. And they were very fat and happy. I had a good clean shots with excellent backstops. The reason I did not know is because they were on my neighbor's property. I will be asking her permission when I see her next. So what is the justification?

In Washington State the game department states it is ILLEAGAL to transfer them to a different area . I got that from the horse's mouth . Sardines or sunflower seeds work pretty good for live traps . So in the end you need to shoot it if you trap it . Heck if your around when one gets caught the others may help to get him out then you have a good chance to get the others . The bull boss is 37" long this was a big racoon . I have no problem taking them all out

The is no justification unless you feel there is,you want permission to kill; some have given it to you,you want to trap and let go,you can do that.

I trap and let go,though I had to kill a crazy raccoon, live and let live unless there is a problem.

About traps ,it is better to spend more and get the trap with 2 opening doors.

I think in a way killing or letting live is the upmost power trip.

For sure there is way too much Mine involved ,that said what is yours is yours.

Look up the parasites, disease, show fast they kill a dog, cat, and they can scratch the shingles off a roof in less the 5 min.and be starting the hole to enter the attic to build nests to birth 4 to 8 young, chew holes in garden hoses to get at the water still in them. Eat all your corn before it's ripe enough for you and sample most all your produce if not eat it all. Their kinda like a pig when it comes to eating small pets, poultry. and knock over garbage cans to graze. The biggest things is the papacites that bring slow death to pets and in turn to people, especially children and they can also transmit rabies. Lawn furniture pads make excellent nesting material too. I've probably forgot some of the reasons. You never want to startle them and be close to them at the same time. A fella stepped on to his upstairs balcony one nite ( stairs leading to the back yard ) he got away with a couple of miserable scratches. Racoons do not belong in a residential setting. They're here 'cause people feed them with trash cans, pet food, small pets and poultry not being properly guarded, shielded. They belong in the wild foraging for their existence. When I see 4 of more playing on the same young tree branch and it snaps I know they're bored (was my tree). A raccoon killed a german shepard up the street from me. There is a woman who feeds everything squirrels, doves, all birds and lets coons nest in her basement, ( they enter through a dog door and are confined to the basement. she is a stewardess and away a lot and she's a $#@!^&%*&^^%#%%$. Raccoons are dangerous, and deadly . Oh and to the stupid people they are so cute so lets feed them

1 of the reasons they don't want you to transport or dead coons is the parasites and diseases travel with them. Colo fish and game says you can trap and or kill any wild life which endangers people, pets, live stock ( from hamsters to horses and cattle that includes chickens and ducks), destroys property ( enters house by clawing through the roof , destroys a chicken coup , nests in machinery causing damage ( under the hood, tearing up upholstery, destroying outdoor furniture, etc. ) by any LEGAL means. So if the town or state has laws against using PBs, air guns, sling shots, leg hold, and dead fall traps, poison, etc, etc, etc. YOU are liable for prosecution. Live traps ( where I live they want them euthanized by an approved professional. And buried by you) SO HERE IN MY OWN HOME I CAN'T PROTECT MY CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN, I'M SORTA OUT OF LUCK. NO BOSCOE WHEN I HAD MILK GOATS I LIVED OUTSIDE THE CITY AND I SHOT RACOONS WITH WHATEVER I CHOOSE. Now no garden, no live stock, no pets. Just a female "? lady?) who lives 3 doors down & feeds all the noxious pest. And according to Fish and Game unless they see her feed and see the racoons eat. and she and the coons must be in the yard at the same time and each must commit the illegal acts at the same moment no arrests will be made. Ever hear of catch 22. I keep looking for a property I can lease for 25 years (I'm 72) or buy out of town in the boonies so I can live a freer life. But the wife has cancer now. And that is a pipe dream. OH! the guy behind me feeds squirrels I finally talked him out of the raccoon feeder ( think they got his little dog). IF DOGS AND CATS ONLY LIVED IN THE WILD, COONS WOULD BE FAT AND THERE WOULD NOT BE ANY DOGS AND CATS.

Ignore the raccoon needs a hug troll. I have a veterinarian friend who said raccoons can carry a parasite which is lethal to humans. I use to trap them with humane traps but they would twist them into a pretzel getting out of them. I got tired of repairing them so now I thump them. Shoot them in the boiler room they will run off and croak somewhere where you wont even have to handle them.

Buzzards , possums will thank you, so will your chickens

Just about everywhere it is not cool to shoot into other people’s property, hope your neighbor is super cool. My ex-neighbor called me to shoot squirrels in his yard every time he saw one. My new neighbor supposed to be a squirrel lover, there sure won’t be much to love around this block! LOL

Coons carry all sorts of nasty parasites and one of them is lethal to human, with 2 little kids likes to play in the yard the trash pandas won’t get a pass from me. But they haven’t shown up for a good while, if I catch them on my security cameras again I’ll be putting out the coon traps.

Ok so Trash Pandas is a cool name. My wife said I could not kill them. I just have to scare them.... hello paint ball gun.... but if they come back again.....

LOL My wife told me yesterday the same thing about a rabbit I killed NO MORE . Well ,while talking to a fellow member on the phone today another one showed up , guess what happened . Wife was at the Casino BTW . What they don't know won't hurt you but don't get caught ! LOL

Every thread on coons gets multiple replies about these "deadly" parasites they carry.

Got bad news kiddies it is the same "deadly" parasite your dog carries...

Educate yourselves

Honestly as.long as you aren't ROOTING through their feces or eating poorly cooked Racoons you are no more likely to pick up a "deadly" parasite from a raccoon than from a pig.

On "Raccoon hugging" ... Don't hug them, eat them after proper cooking.

And NEVER relocate pests only the most selfish person would relocate their problem onto someone else's place.

@cornpone: there are reasons everyone call them trash panda. If people let their dog dig through trash and eat what they find then yes they are likely to carry the same deadly parasites but for the most part people don’t. Also if the ground has covering like plants and mulch the poop is not always easily spotted. Then they are the most prolific rabies carrier. While cooking thoroughly would make them safe to eat but having them around certainly isn’t if you have pets and kids playing in the yard. Dogs love to sniff poop as we all know and keeping kids from putting their fingers into their mouth is an ongoing battle all parents had to fight.

Coons are very tough with amazing immune system which enables them to forage and eat just about anything but that makes them carriers for all sorts of nasty stuff that doesn’t affect them but deadly to others.
