R1 question

I bought this R1 .20 cal rifle from Bob's gun and tackle in norfolk, va.many years ago. Late 70's early 80's. It was and still is a very accurate rifle. I had never tested the gun on a chronograph till today. It is shooting old silver jets at 787, wondering if this is on par compared to when it was new.. hoping someone here will advise with some shooting data of their own. Second what new pellet on the market will compare to the silver jets. My rifle loves them. Thanks Barry

Barry:

I’m a long time .20 caliber R1 owner also. I bought mine in the same era that you did. I still have some of the old Beeman literature and found some numbers for velocity and weight.

The old Beeman Silver Jet was a 11.21 grain pellet. I have no energy numbers for those but there was some information for the .20 Ram Jet which was a 11.7 grain pellet. Energy was given as 15 ft-lbs. Your gun shooting the Silver Jet at 787 feet per second generates 15.4 ft-lbs.

Looks like you’re in pretty good shape.

Thanks all for taking your time to share your info. It really pleased me that my old beeman R1 is still healthy. I have several boxes of silver jets pellets, only problem is they have oxidized over the years. Is there any way to renew these pellets? I will order and try some H&N pellets. Maybe I will get a picture of my R1 if you all would be interested. Thanks again Barry

My R1 .20 carbine (maybe 3 years old or so) does really well with the JSB 13.73's I broke the original and a HW replacement spring (that actually broke into 5 pieces!) with a Vortek power spring Kit. I was a little disappointed as the velocity was only 700 fps. The energy is at 15 foot pounds. I decided to leave it because it is so smooth and accurate.

The accuracy of the JSB pellets was the best of all I tried.

Barry:

I’m a chemist by trade and I wouldn’t recommend rehabbing your pellets. Things like acid washing work but they also generate solutions of soluble lead (read toxic waste). If you shoot them as they are... because they’re oxidized they’ll put more lead in the air.

I have a few containers of old Beeman pellets and I keep them as display items. Probably best is to donate them to someone who casts.

Here she is. Sorry for the not so wonderfull photos. My first air gun was a sheridan blue streak .20cal. I was 16 when I got it. My older brother growing up lost an eye playing with his bb gun. No way was mom and dad going to allow me to risk losing mine. I was born with sight in only one eye my left. This is why I shoot left handed. Thanks for looking. Barry

Can't remember what the Silver Jets weighed as Beeman didn't show weights on their tins. My guess is the Silver Jet weighed 11 gr. The R1 was rated at something like 860 fps from what I remember. That was with the Laser doomed pellet. I'd say your R1 is shooting pretty good.

Mine always liked the silver jets the best. I bought a whole case the last time I ordered. (Long, long,,long, long time ago. I had the raw .25 out today and also shot the R1 with jsb Diablo 13.73. The R1 is actually louder than the.25 raw. I am surprised. The Beeman was built like a tank, it is a very heavy gun with a very nice and light trigger. It has been quite windy here today trying to get it sighted with the jsb's. Thanks for the interest and sharing your Beeman's. Barry
