I tried foam, cardboard/paper, even a whole comforter in plastic. Next one will he’ll be a stack of old t shirts or cotton fabric.

I know this isn’t exactly what you’re asking, but one of the best ways I have found to reduce the rapport of the smack at the target, is to camouflage the sound with other white noise. And the best thing I found, for that is a fountain that constantly makes that smacking noise.

At 100y outdoors i can hear the .177 pellet hit a copy paper on a thin cardboard backing .. thin not the thicker coragated .. . Pop can 12 pack cardboard type.. i cant think of anything that's totally noiseless.

I just bought two 3/8” thick rubber truck mud flaps. I’m going to make a box that the back side will be on a 45° angle and then the bottom portion of the box will have ground up playground rubber chunks.
I assume the pellet may make a little noise but my first priority is longevity of the target.
I was in Tractor supply the other day and saw some 1/2” thick rubber floor mats. 3’ x 4’, $31.99.
They were fairly hard but I felt the mud flaps were a bit harder so I purchased them instead.
