Quick clipping question

It is a 22 nova liberty with the donnyfl adapter to a cheap silencer, thing is it will shoot pellet in pellet groups and then shoot 5" to 2' groups and then back to hole in hole its driving me nuts. I pulled the barrel and cleaned it good no difference I pulled the silencer still does the same thing. I tried different pellets at different velocities and still the same thing extremely accurate to crap and back to great. will a regulator issue act like this? I have not filled my air tank in a few days so I have been starting at 3000psi instead of 3800 to 4000 would that do anything?

Thank you,

soon to find a new hobby Jim

 Bobo,

I am using a Donnyfl adapter and it is very high quality but also came with a high quality price. I am buying the adapters for now and I am planning on buying one of his suppressors that I can use on my 25 marauder, 22 S410 and the 22 nova liberty. Can you recommend which one would be good for all three guns and do you lose performance by using a 25 Cal suppressor on a 22?

Thank you,

Jim

If you have already tried removing the silencer but still got the same result , clipping being the cause can be ruled out don’t u think ?

That's what I was thinking too. Maybe the gun just isn't accurate. Or maybe the pellets using isn't good for the gun. I suggest using a chrony and see if the fps are same. If speed is same and silencer is off, and still group like crap. Then it's the gun/barrel.

I can offer a couple of answers from experience. Yes, damaged pellets at loading can result in this behavior. And yes, pellet clipping can be intermittent, but you have already seen the same behavior without the silencer, which seems to rule it out. A dirty barrel can behave in this manner too. It could have fouling that requires more aggressive cleaning. Loading single shot could suggest a faulty magazine if pellets are being damaged at loading. I would first do a chrono run and check for consistent velocity. A dirty or dry hammer can cause this result (this will vary, check with maker about lube). I don't believe you mentioned how much you have shot this rifle. It could simply be a bad barrel. I had a Red Wolf barrel that shot this way, and it turned out to have a couple of machining imperfections that was damaging pellets. Compared to cartridge rifles, air rifles have so many variables involved, trouble shooting can be frustrating.

It is a simple matter to determine if you are having clipping issues. Remove the moderator and Donnie FL adapter and shoot several groups with the same pellets you have been using recently and see if the problem persist.

Then remove the barrel shroud from the rifle and shoot some groups with the same pellets and see what kind of group you get. Don't worry about trying to hit the bullseye on your target, just keep spinning at the same spot and let the pellets hit where they will. During this test you're just looking at how tight your groups are, and if they are getting out of shape on you like before.

Shooting your rifle with just a naked Barrel will probably not have any problems like you described. But when you put the barrel shroud back on the rifle is probably when you're going to see the problem reoccur.

Do this test and let's see what happens.

RJ,

Where were you 350 pellets ago? And the winner is RJ the mags are somehow causing the issue, I switched to the single shot tray and now at 26 yards I get one big hole from five shots. I never would have thought of the mags from what was happening.

A big thanks to all for the great advise to solve this issue, Now to try and fix the mags and to try the Gauntlet or Marauder mags.

Thanks again,

Jim
