FX Question on compressed air limitations in .22 cal slug shooter

Would it be possible to push a 40 grain slug to the same power output as the new .35 caliber FX Dynamic? Why or why not?

For reference, the new Dynamic is pushing the .35 cal hybrid slugs at 1080 FPS which means 176 F.P.E.

Could I reach 170-ish F.P.E. with a 40 grain slug or a custom made .22 slug that’s heavier?

If you launch an 81 gr hybrid slug at 1080 fps, you'll get just shy of 210 fpe. To get that amount of energy with a 40 gr slug, you'll have to push it to 1536 fps.
To get 170 fpe out of a 40 gr slug, it needs to travel at 1382 fps, still well above supersonic.

To add to @R_M And if you go supersonic, you will shed velocity and lose stability once the sonic wave goes past the projectile velocity.

You need 69 gr slug @ 1070 fps to make 175 FPE in .22, and that is just a really heavy slug...could it be done, sure, NOE makes a few slugs in the 60-70+ gr range for .225 cal, so you'd need a custom barrel.


You would need...

42" custom .225 custom barrel
3600 psi
150 cc plenum
full bore porting
69 gr slug

The above would make approximately 170 fpe @ 1060 fps depending on slug fitment in the bore.

1070 is a standard velocity .22 Lr . why not use that instead ?
