Question for the experts

hey folks new here and fairly new to PCP. I currently own a benjamin marauder and have had decent results with it around 25 yards, but if i get past that range the results diminish quickly. So ive been eyeing some high end PCPs and currently have my sights set on a RAW hm1000x LRT. I have an opportunity to get one at an awesome price but wanted to see the thoughts here first. I will use it mainly for fun shooting paper and occasional squirrel and Im currently thinking .22. The downside is there backlog is pretty long and Im completely clueless about high end airguns. The others im considering are the FX Dreamline in laminate, the AA s510 xs, and the FX crown. Is there another gun out there that i should be looking at? I want accuracy above all else out to 100yds.

thanks in advance

I have a RAW LRT in .25 and a Red Wolf HP in .22.

Both are fantastic rifles but if I could only have one it would be the Red Wolf. It shoots */- 1” all day long and will shoot the Monster Redesigned 25.89 on HP and the AA 18 grain on medium power at the same POI. Ken Hicks @ SPAW tuned it before he shipped it.

I love my RAW, too. It is a beast in terms of weight and stock design compared to the Red Wolf. I enjoy them both immensely and you can’t go wrong either way.

I'm no expert, but all the guns you mentioned should be good out to 100 yards. It's not a given that you just screw on a scope and bingo!, one inch groups at a hundred yards all day long. Your skill and ability to finesse the airgun to do what you want is a biggie. Unless your marauder has some issues, and they certainly can, you should be able to get some distance and accuracy out of it. It's very easy to work on and the frustration level is low if you need to tear it apart for a fix, upgrade or just a check over.

High end guns are good and all, but if you're not able to shoot a mrod out to and past 25 yrds accurately and consistently, it may not be the gun, but more so the shooter of the gun.

I’ve shot benchrest centerfire very competitive for years even build a few guns. I’m sure there are differences with Airguns but I don’t think it’s me. It will shoot ragged holes at 25 and I have a few videos shooting the head off a matchstick at 25 but it gets wonky past that...possibly the garbage scope. But either way I want a new one lol

I'm not saying do not buy a new gun, but part of growing a shooter imo, is finding out why something isn't performing the way it is.

It could be that the pellet is moving too fast, or moving too slow. It could be the pellet isn't matched to the barrel. Could be barrel deformation, faulty crown, magazines are a little off. Inconsistent fps due to not having a good tune on the gun, the list goes on and on.

When I say it could be on the shooter, I do not mean that it's your shooting ability, but more so not knowing why something isn't working.

It is ok to want. That is on you.

#Powder burner experience is no guarantee of air gun success. Airguns are very particular about ammo, much more so than even the notoriously finicky . 22lr. That said, my own Mrod . 25 shoots 1/2 the sized group my fancy . 22lr will shoot.

#Pellets are drag stabilized, where as bullets are spin stabilized. Spin a pellet too fast, and it will diverge from controlled flight after a short distance (25 yards...). You spin pellets too fast by pushing them too fast. Slow it down with a heavier pellet.

#Some pellets do not agree with the barrel designs. My Mrod does not like the H&N line of pellets (won't stay on a 4" target at 40 yards) but it loves the AA diabolo... Printing clover leafed groups all day long.

#You can sneer at the Mrod, a decent gun with a lot of potential. You are missing out on the skill to detect what the missing performance is caused by. For me, the hunt for the right tune is very satisfying.

#As a skilled technical shooter, I would think that you are made of sterner stuff that that. Some guys just want to throw money at $2,000 guns and expect the gun to be perfect.

Welcome to AGN, this place is chock fill of good people and great advice.

##The solid gold velocity for pellets is under 950-ish FPS (not FPE.... stupid smartphone!), with each larger caliber requiring slower and slower fps to achieve best results. The shape of the diabolo pellet forces the passing air into the transonic speed region, which causes instability from the associated shock waves. Larger diameter pellets move more air, requiring slower speeds to avoid the issue.

##You cuss at your scope. You are in the only one charge of that detail. Will you use the same scope on your new 🤑🤑🤑 wonder gun???

JasonBowlin,

Tell us more about the Marauder in more detail. Pellets used, velocity, if known, factory settings or not, caliber. There is nothing wrong with wanting an upgrade, but there might be a simple and easy fix to your Marauders accuracy issues. If you can give us more information, there is an entire army of great shooters than can most likely get that Marauder up and shooting like it should. I, for one would love to help in that endeavor. I think down the road, the accuracy that the Marauder potentially has, will surprise you.

Nothing wrong with wanting a high end gun. Nothing wrong with working on the Mrod either. Maybe do both. I'd suggest before you decide which of the PCP's will be your next you find a way to handle and shoot them AND I KNOW THAT'S NOT EASY TO DO. Guys can tell you the pros and cons but trust me you HAVE to handle the guns to determine what you want to put YOUR money on.

I agree the Red Wolf is a sweet gun. I'll agree the RAW is heavy and louder then most others. FX crown or continuum might be a good compromise for you but again if I had a do over I'd really want to take my time looking them over. And honestly I don't know which I'd pick. I have an FX impact MK II, a Red Wolf and a RAW. I can't tell you which one would be my pick if I could have only one which is probably why I have the three of them. The FX continuum might FOR ME be the best compromise.

Jason, I pretty much agree with most every thing that has already been said. There are a lot of very experienced and knowledgeable air gunners here. I myself just stepped off into the world of PCP's with a new Marauder. There is definitely something wrong if your Marauder has accuracy issues beyond 25 yards. That rifle is capable of superb accuracy well beyond that. I also agree that you should first find out the "why" to your accuracy issues. Is it the scope, the rifle, or maybe you before you drop a hefty sum on a "higher end" pcp. I wish you luck in whatever you decide. It's awesome sport.

Thanks guys for all the replies...I did some work on the mrod when I got it by direction of well known mrod guru at the time but cannot remember his name...I know I did the orings mod and to be honest I can’t remember what else. I just sold my magnetospeed chrono, looking to go labradar so don’t have any current chrono info but if memory serves I set it around 800. I’m open to figuring this one out but will definitely need some guidance as my knowledge of these guns is very limited. Currently performs the best with crossman premier dome.

I just ordered a vortex Diamondback 6-24 x 50 that will go on the mrod for now while you guys help me work out the bugs.

I already have an scba tank and scuba tank and fill stations for both so air and charging isn’t a problem.

I will still most likely order another gun but I love the idea of getting the Mrod dialed in.

Anyone willing to help just PM me what info you need and I’ll do my best to answer.

thsnks guys!

JasonBowlin,

To get started, what caliber are you shooting, and how familiar are you with the teardown and reassembly of the Marauder? If you are not afraid to tinker with it, we can 100% help. I'm posting this here, instead of a private message, this way, all can see and help diagnose the problem, and get you up and running with better accuracy.

If you would like to see a complete teardown and rebuild of a Marauder, I have several on my U Tube Channel, Field Target Tech.
