The need to eradicate rats on my permission is how I got into air guns. Wouldn't call myself a bulk rat shooter, but I've probably destroyed upwards of 60 so far this year, and I would estimate:
Young rat (up to 7" body) approx 1" Adult rat (up to 9" body) approx 1.25" Mega rat (up to 12" body) approx 1.75"
Mine are all brown rats, and distance will probably vary by species.
I have an idea percolating for an auto-ranging rat scope including DVR. Might have problems with one eyed rats though Percolation has reached the point of ordering a couple hundred dollars worth of parts and illuminators.
Oh, I see - image processing? Something like an Odroid XU4 sampling images via a little 1/3" CCD camera, driving servos on zoom and parallax until you're sampling reasonably dense clusters (focused eyes?), within a certain distance from centre to centre?
What else could you build with the parts you've purchased? I often embark on little build projects that end up morphing into completely different things!
Once they look my way; the nite site wolf and my .25 Bobcat do the rest. I use a caldwell stable table in back of my pickup like the prairie dog hunters but at night on brown rats at the grain silos. It's great outdoor night fun.
