Prophet Barrel You think its going to flex

I heard of people putting barrel stiffing bands and carbon fiber sleeves on guns to make them stiffer, No flex..

I pulled my spare 25 caliber Prophet barrel out of the box to clean it up, Now I get a good chance to look at it as I was in a hurry to swap it out for the 177 barrel, This barrel is built solid You could hang a 20 lb weight on the end and there would be zero flex, So all you Prophet owners hang your silencer on the end, Your radar tester, And just about any thing else you want to hang from the end of the barrel, Its not going to flex...

So I pulled out my spare Mutant 22 CZ barrel, I dought I could bend that even in my power lifting days.... OK OK I am on a roll I pull out my Vulcan # 2 177 barrel same thing you aren't going to bend this with out a vice and a VERY big hammer,,, So whats all this stuff about barrel braces , Carbon fiber slip ons to make it stiffer and pictures of barrels going up and down as the pellet leaves the barrel, And tuning the barrel with a weight on the end,,, Are you guys on crack,,, Because if your barrels shake and wiggle and wabble when the pellet is shot,, I would change brands ,, But thats just me to each his own,,,

Remember you’re not hanging a can or radar on the Prophets barrel, you’re hanging it on the shroud. The shroud can flex half the cross section of the oring that supports it on the end of our very stout 15mm barrel which is only supported by 2 orings in the breech. So I did use CF for my shroud just to insure my barrel wasn’t effected harmonically with heavier slugs. If RTI would do their barrels like Taipan, it would be game over. But even RTI bought into the whole convenient caliber change thing. You have to admire Taipans outlook on caliber change. You want a different caliber? Fine, buy another gun.

OH, Now back when the Mutants 1st came out, Grandpa of theTaipans someone did manage to get some 177 kits and change the 22 Mutants to a 177, I think there was seven kits made,,, I was a day late and a dollar short,,,, I did snag one of the 1st 22 Mutants to enter the USA states , I did buy a one off hand made stock second hand from a guy named UNCLE...

I've figure the same thing. While at work, the last 20 or so years, that's what I did...was test things while working in the Aerospace Industry.

In reality, as long as a "reasonably" good material is used for the tube (barrel) it takes a pretty heavy force to bend a piece of tubing. And we always did the measuring with transducers, not cheap calipers or even dial indicators in most cases. I'm talking four and five digit places (0.xxxxx).

But I've not figured to try and bend my barrels, not knowing exactly WHAT...they are made of, and how much force is require to put permanent deformation into the tubing ! Plus now that I'm retired, I don't have access to all of those expensive tools to measure movement, but only a 3 digit dial indicator.

Yeah, no carbon fiber doubler tubes here..! Interesting thing, the way that I've read that many if not most...people do a permanent installation of a C.F. tube onto a pellet gun barrel, COULD...ACTUALLY put a permanent deformation into the barrel as the bonding agent sets..!

It's interesting, that few IF anyone thinks about the various possibility's. Just one guy (or girl) following the next...down the proverbial rabbit hole, with no actual knowledge of what they are doing. Slather the glue on, slide the C.F. tube on...and your done ! I watched one "prominent" air gun tuner...JUST put his glue on the barrel in one string down the top of the barrel, then twist the barrel once to "distribute" the glue...What a FREAKING joke.

I like the solid barrels personally, but I wouldn’t be against a carbon reinforced barrel to save weight. I prefer the proof research design, but we wouldn’t have to use anything special since we don’t deal with the heat. Just think, a nice feather weight barrel, say 2.5mm wall thickness trued then carbon wrap then machine the cf to desired size.

Do check your set screws that hold the shroud in place. Shot mine prophet last night and was clipping the mod. Found a couple screws had loosened over the weekend of it bouncing around in the back of the truck. Retightened with some oring clippings for a buffer against the shroud and all is good again.

it is not goin to flex but that cheap aluminum part that centers the barrel in the shroud with a small oring can destroy a moderator that costs hundreds of dollars.

That is true of the barrel spacer. A couple wraps of floss under the oring helps to tighten the interface between the spacer and the shroud to keep the barrel in line with the end cap.
