Would a prismatic scope such as a 5X by Immersive Optics be suitable for shorter ranges like 5-25 yards? And, would a mil-dot reticle even be useful at those ranges?
I have the IO 14x50 and I like it. Also to add here, for 10 yards/meters or shorter also for quick shots I prefer a green dot (with a good lazer for daylight) and just chase those squirrels handheld without aiming through a scope.
I have two primary arms prism scopes on my ARs and like them for their toughness and simplicity. They do have a ranging reticle with drop aiming points that could be used to extend the useful range of these low magnification units. I think the range of magnification is 1x to 5x with all units being fixed magnification by nature of the construction. As a bonus they have adjustable eye piece for those with vision issues. The reticle is etched so if the battery dies you can still use the optic. I generally don't use the illumination feature during day and find the sights to be superior to red dots.
I have a pile of optics from all my ARs and settled on a Spitfire 2 HD Gen 2 for my Leshiy 2. I originally liked the TA31 ACOG more, but the eyerelief and weight of the the Spitfire 2 was just superior to the TA31. Worst one I ran was a Vortex Viper 1-6. Too heavy.
5y is kindof short for any optic ..i have limited experience with a prism, but imo theyre good for action type applications .. for detail work at 20+ you can use more mag though, depends on usage ...
Use mine to 50yds. Strelock will give you holdover. It's easier to just practice a little and it'll be easier. Zero closer in. It's a hunting scope . If you are good @ holdover who knows? I'm not!
