I received a lot of very helpful feedback on the earlier thread seeking "Steyer Experience" ...thanks to all who posted or sent me PMs. The input has helped me:
1. Confirm that I would like to own a Steyr hunter.
2. Helped me decide between the Steyr Hunter 5, Steyer Hunter 5 Scout, and the LG110 HP Hunter. The LG110 High Power Hunter is what I've decided I want.
3. I've even learned where I'm likely to get the best price and good service.
I will call the chosen vendor before I order the rifle. I'll be asking if there are any barrel choices I could get that would accept a Moderator and still keep the rifle around 40-44" overall length. I know that many moderators are 6-8" long and if I simply grub screw on an adaptor and then put an HW or Huggett moderator on the rifle it will be more like 46-48" in length.
I've learned here I could have a gunsmith cut threads on the muzzle of the barrel and skip the adapter part. I know I could also have the front (non-crowned end) cut to reduce the barrel length, and then go with an adaptor + moderator or threaded barrel + moderator.
I'm going to get the rifle first and then decide if the noise level is higher than I want. (I don't have neighbors close enough to bother.) If I want to quiet the rifle I'm wondering if the adaptor or threaded barrel and the Belita Huggett (the shortest LDC I'm aware of) would make a big difference in noise level? I did read some older threads that indicated their are better moderators (in terms of quieting the report) than Huggetts. I've owned rifles (Daytstate Regal XL) with Air Streams and I put a full size Huggett on another rifle (Air Wolf) and was completely satisfied with the result.
I have heard several folks talk about switching out barrels and maybe that's the way to go to get a shorter rifle with LDC? I don't want to lose much power or make the rifle noisier. I'm thinking that Steyr has engineered the optimum barrel length and type to make this rifle the shooter that has established its positive reputation. I'd be less than a genius if I tinkered with that.
I do like the magazine (5-shot) feature of the wood-stocked Hunter versions, even the auto. But, I've read a lot in various posts that indicate the trigger isn't as wonderful as the LG110? I also like the sleekness of the LG110 wth the adjustable comb.
If my questions aren't too much of a pain, I'd appreciate additional insight from those in the know.
Thanks
