Preferred skunk caliber/pellet

I did not want to hijack the smelly cat post about shooting skunks. We covered a lot of good topics on there on the why hunt skunks and saw a great video. What I am wondering is the preferred caliber/pellet in an airgun to use on skunks. Some say .22 is best. A Diabolo pellet passes through more cleanly, than a Hades or Predator Polymag, so is less likely to alarm the skunk and cause him to spray. The same reasoning for using a .22 vs. a .25 or .30 caliber. My situation is unique. While I have 3.6 acres to shoot on with 35 open acres behind, I only have line of sight for 40 yards, after which point any animal will be over a hill and be non-shootable. To complicate matters, on the other side of that hill there are 10 or so large holes. Any skunk I shoot only has to go 5-10 yards to make it to one of those holes, so as sure as I am I killed them, they are frequently unrecoverable.

What do you guys think is the best caliber and pellet for skunk hunting with a minimum risk of spray, and as close to DRT as you can get?

heart lung shots with skunks .... Shot placement done correctly they ball up and die DRT. 50/50 chance of a spray. head shots 99% chance they spray.

Accuracy over caliber with a 20 ft lb .177 being plenty and a 50 ft lb .25 being overkill ... so somewhere in between IMO.

Guess my shots are a little off, according to some internet diagram their heart is pretty low. The times I shot them in the vitals they all walked off a little, not too far but definitely not DRT. Usually I hit them right in the middle behind the legs but I’ll try lower next time.
