Prairie Dog Scope

I’m looking for descent scope with adequate magnificant to shoot prairie dogs out to 150 yds. Would like stay under $600. Here are some scopes on my list so far. The Discovery is very tempting based on price, feature and other member feedback.

  • Athlon Midas BTR 4.4-27x50 SFP IR (can only find gen 2 now for $590)
  • Athlon Ares BTR 4.4-27x50 FFP IR (on sale at UA for $599, reticle is very cluttered)
  • Aztec 5.5-25x50 FFP IR ($540)
  • Optisan EVX 5-20x50i SFP IR ($400)
  • Discovery HD 5-25x50 FFP IR ($270, great price - reticle is cluttered)

The last two hunts I used Athlon Argos 6-24x50 FFP. The vertical “Christmas Tree” reticle was a bonus for hold over in wind. Zeroed at 75 gave me full use of the reticle at all magnifications. My furthest kill was lasered 188 yards.

JBravo103,

I have been so overwhelmed 😩 by the many features and options that I finally ended up making two comprehensive scope comparison tables.

Specs and requirements to get onto the list
• Price $300-500, with some fudging
• Min. Parallax = 10y
• Reticle specifications MIL or MOA; hash marks for hold overs
• Turret Adjustment Range 50 MOA min.
• FFP or SFP
• IR or not
• Weight
• Tube: 30mm
• Exposed turrets
