Practicing question

How do you shoot when practicing? When I got my first PCP I shot almost exclusively from a table with sand bag or a front rest. I got to where I could shoot very tight groups. The first time I went into the field I could hardly hit anything because I didn't have my table. Now, even though I don't hunt, I either shoot standing with a Caldwell Magnum Fieldpod or standing with a Shockey Trigger Stick tripod. The trigger stick is very light and if I needed to take it to the field it can be carried easily. The only time I shoot from a table now is to sight in a new scope or troubleshoot when something is wrong and I want to take myself as shooter out of the equation.

I shoot from the four positions of Standing, Kneeling, Sitting, and Prone. Usually I have a sling around my arm and attached to the front sling swivel, or hand stop. I often use a shooting coat as well, but not always. I rarely use any sort of rest unless hunting and one seems to be handy.

I am weak on benchrest shooting, so I have been doing this a quite a bit more. I shoot as well from the bench as I do from prone with my Creedmoor Hardback coat and tight sling. By all rights, the bench should be better but it is not in with me using it.

I try to shoot with as much support as possible, when hunting, but will/must occasionally take standing shots. When sighting in, or for chrony recordings, I shoot off a bipod or sandbags while sitting at a table. But, lately, (with the rifle sighted in already and no further fussing to be done) I try and practice from a variety of positions and levels of support. Like the OP says, if you don't practice the shots, you likely won't make them when forced to in the field.

Truth be told, I zero in the field as a matter of necessity. I live in a small one-bedroom apartment these days. And I am hard-pressed to find a decent shooting range down here on the border in SoCal. It's really sad, actually. The benches are woefully narrow and trying to find a range with variable target placement out to 100 yards? Fuhgeddaboudit!

I use whatever my environment has to offer. I have several positions for shooting from a tree. My favorite is to squat down with my back against the tree.....arms resting on knees. Very quick.....very steady. Shooting from a fence.....legs spread wide with left arm locked and pushing on fence.....lean into the fence and rest rifle on left hand. Im a good offhand shot too.....but I always maximize whatever my environment has to offer.
