Because glasses, like shoes, somehow have managed to keep their prices rediculously high even though the shoes are made in Sri Lanka or where ever. Glasses are a ripoff. You know as well as I do that it doesn't cost much to make lenses and frames compared to a scope or binos.
Eye glasses are a racket, in case you haven't figured it out. All the frames are made in China for pennies I would guess. Why is it when you go into one of those fancy eyeglass stores and get whacked for $4-500 for a pair of glasses you can get the same thing online for $79? The local "Optical Fashion" store has a fancy building, well lit, with huge displays of frames and a large staff. You have to take a number and wait to be served. I'm not going to subsidize that unnecessary overhead just so I can feel good.

Of course there is no convincing or arguing with those who see healthcare as a commodity or as a matter of "parts & labor"... or worse... as some sort of "scam." It's sad, but there's no changing their minds.

Optometry (and all other health care) is a SERVICE. Attached to my glasses (and the price I paid) is professional service. And at my optometrist, the service is excellent. Superb. They take very good care of me. And I pay 100% cash out of pocket. Full fee. And it's well worth it. I could get it done at the VA for a small fraction of the cost. But I'd rather pay for the SERVICE. I didn't pay $1200 just for my frames ($300) and lenses ($900). There is a whole lot of service that comes attached to those glasses.

That all said... enjoy your cheap mail-order glasses in good health. If it works for you..."vaya con Dios."

I've looked through a $300 scope. And I've looked through a $2500++ scope. There's a HUGE difference in quality of glass / image. It's the same with any optical product.
