Pishtov RAS-01

O.K. guys, the Brown truck carrying my gun didn't come by the house until after 8:00 pm, but I now have my new gun. I can so far say that not everything is Skittles and beer, but at this point I feel neither pisht-ov nor pisht-on. I will at least be able to cover a few points about my new gun tonight.

First off, the gun was shipped and received in a single box, which unfortunately UPS didn't treat so nicely. Ru-roh...

That little yellow safety card is in a zip lock bag, which I believe also contained the second magazine (first mag is installed in the breech) and fill adapter. Unfortunately it did not make the transit intact.

IMG_0856.1604116998.JPG

Magazine (and I guess fill probe, as it is MIA) made their way out of the bag, with the mag ending up loose in the box, and the fill probe ending up... well, somewhere between Texas and California.

Gun folded in box. Some looseness to the adjustable AR style stock, but the folding mechanism locks up pretty nice and tight. Locks in the folded position as well.

IMG_0858.1604117223.JPG

Some scratch damage on the air cylinder (from sliding around loose in the box during transit?) and a nick on the edge of the fill hole. Wasn't this gun supposed to come with some kind of dust pin to be in that hole when not filling? Anyway, this is a beater truck gun to me, but if you are looking for something pristine and/or collectable, well...

Some close-ups. Mine is a .22 gauge like the referenced unboxing video showed. Oh, and and you may have noted that the breech body is not red, as shown on the web site.

Bet I know where they buy their gauges. But how much pressure to fill to? No instruction manual, only a 'safety card', which implored me to fill only to the pressure specified in the instruction manual. Well Duh! Anyway, the sales web site said 200 bar in the specification section, so that's what she got:

But wait... you said that your rifle was missing the fill probe!?!?! Well, I'm the impatient type and while you should not try this at home, I decided to see if a fill probe from another gun of Turkish manufacture might fit/work. The one from the Hatsan Hydra fit just right, and allowed filling of the Pishtov cylinder as well. I'll still contact the distributor/seller, but who knows whether they even have any parts in stock yet?

I'll finish up tonight's ramblings with some subjective sound and objective trigger-pull data.

This gun doesn't know the meaning of mouse fart, although to be honest I 'assessed' its noise level in the garage during trigger pull weight testing and without firing a pellet- probably the loudest possible scenario. But I can pretty much assure that this gun will not be backyard friendly even under better conditions, without an additional moderator. Haven't tried to remove end cap from the shroud yet, but if it does come off it appears that it will have male threads in approximately the 22mm diameter range.

Trigger pull was better news (at least to me). Single stage with a medium heavy (not in a bad way) initial take-up, and a pretty surprising break of the shot. Will take some getting used to, but much better initially to me than some guns I have shot with a 2 stage trigger with a gritty, heavy break. 3 trigger pulls were very consistent: 1# 15.6 oz, 1# 15.4 oz, 1# 15.6 oz. And the good thing is that it doesn't feel like a 2 pound trigger. While it is no Red Wolf, Pulsar, FX, etc., I think I will be able to get used to it pretty quickly and get along with it pretty well.

That's all for now - hopefully more tomorrow.

Some additional random thoughts:

Rifle comes VERY well oiled, and one will be spending some time cleaning off excess oil for a bit.

Rifle is generally pretty well balanced. A bit front heavy while holding one-handed by the pistol grip (un-scoped).

First patches through the bore (rifle un-fired by me). First 5 were wetted with Ballistol, last 3 were dry.

I sent Pishtov an email about the poor packaging. Their reply was 'due to pressure from customers they hurried their deliveries. This is why there is no manual or decent packing. I think they should have worked all this out before selling. I explained that US customers would not tolerate a damaged gun on delivery. Fortunately, my RAS 3, comes in a gun case and will be delivered today. I'm disappointed in the loud report, hopefully my donnyl will fit. Looking forward to your shooting results.

My RAS-01 arrived right before I had to leave for a business trip, but I was able to snap some pictures before I left. As with bckyrdsnpr52's experience, PS is less than gentle with their handling of packages. Pishtov Arms needs to double box all of these rifles before shipping and they certainly need to do something other than just toss a rifle into a box and ship it. Even with the discount they are currently offering, these rifle aren't cheap, and folks expect more that that kind of money!

My box also had some external damage, but I was fortunate enough to get one of the models that comes in a hard case, so it made the trip with now scuffs or bruises:

Here are some close up pictures of the rifle and the nice Turkish Walnut stock. As ckyrdsnpr52 pointed out, the rifle comes well oiled!

The fill probe is very similar to the one ckyrdsnpr52 showed a picture of in his review. I did zoom in on it from one of the previous pictures so you can kinda see what it looks like. I have FX fill probes at home and this looks similar to this as well, so I'll know more when I get back. My FX and Hatsan Fill probes are the same size and I regularly interchange them when filling with no problems. It wouldn't surprise me if they sourced the fill probes and the gauges from FX!

First report of today.

The rifle held air just fine overnight, so that is a positive!

Responded to Pishtov's 'Your Order Has Been Delivered' email regarding the condition of my gun, the shipping damage and the missing fill probe. I noticed that the Pishtov sales web site now contains a note that the red gun parts shown in the photo will now actually be delivered in black, so hopefully future buyers will not be surprised as I was.

The 'business end' of a fill probe from an FX Dreamline looks different from the OEM Pishtov probe shown by FLgunner, but it does fit the Pishtov cylinder fill hole, and may also work.

I'm going to set up for chrono testing inside one of my backyard sheds due to the loudness of the gun and will proceed gathering that data later when folks in my neighborhood have had the chance to wake up.

Flgunner

Your stock looks pretty decent, hope mine looks as good. It's a gorgeous day here in Texas, so hoping mine arrives before the Sun goes down. First thing I will,do is remove the shroud and inspect the baffles and threading for suppressors. I can deal with the noise if the gun is accurate, if not I`m "turning it back" as Pishtov says.

Looking down the end of the barrel, I can see the crown of the barrel right at the edge of the end cap, so I don't think there are any baffles. I asked if the end cap was removable, hoping there amy be an adapter that would fit, but was told the current version won't be able to have an LDC attached, but they plan on doing so on future rifles. The new barrels should be available for purchase when available and they said they will also be offering a LDC on their site.

I'm interested in seeing what you find when you investigate the shroud further. I tried to unscrew the end cap last night, but it wouldn't budge, so no telling how it's actually attached.

Initial chrono work done. Doesn't seem like too much of a powerhouse, regardless of the noise it makes. Cylinder re-filled to 200 bar (based on gun's gauge) before every shot string.

Pishtov Long String.1604166249.jpg

What I learned:

1) Work the lever slowly and smoothly when chambering a pellet and you will be rewarded.

2) Feel more than usual resistance when chambering? Muzzle velocity will be slow.

3) Magazine has some difficulty chambering the first pellet (last one loaded) sometimes. Magazine has difficulty in chambering the last pellet (first one loaded) much more often. This resulted in an unusually low muzzle velocity for the string, and adversely impacted the ES and SD.

4) Wow, seems like it will get a reasonable number of usable shots (at least within 25 yards).

5) MV in the 700+ fps range was occurring at around 150 bar on the pressure gauge.

6) Compared to the pressure gauge on my bottle, the gun reads high (200 bar on the gun's FX gauge = ~185 bar on my bottle's better gauge).

7) No real hiccups in the first couple hundred shots.

8) Definitely feel the gun and magazine smoothing out as it is cycled & shot.

Accuracy next. Too bad about these first production guns apparently not being moderator capable, per above posts.

Flgunner,

There are set screws on the receiver that have to be loosened and the the barrel shroud screw off the barrel, no baffles. My gun arrived in one piece, but after 50 something shots and trying jsb 18's, crosman 14' and kodiak 21', I cant get a group under 2" @ 30 yrds. Also I started hearing air hissing from the breech. I'm sending mine back. If you decide to remove your stock, good luck. There is a Allen head screw in front of the trigger and another ser screw under that. There is another in the grip but I cant find away to back that one out. I must say I am very disappointed in this gun, I think they released it way to soon, without working out the bugs.

O.K., accuracy testing is complete with some VERY CONSISTENT results. My RAS-06 is consistently a very poor and inaccurate shooter (in my hands).

IMG_0882.1604172605.JPG

Occasionally it would seem like things might be coming together, but then the next round would shoot off by 1.5". Gun was filled to 150 bar before every 9 round (3 sets of 3 shots) shot string.

Sometimes when I am having accuracy issues with a new gun I am testing I wonder whether I just forgot how to shoot. So I pull out an old standby and shoot a few groups with it. In this case it was my Wolverine HP in .22 cal, and the groups (2x3 shots and 1x5 shots) are in the upper right. Same set up, same distance, same conditions, same shooter.

I wanted to like the Pishtov but I don't think that I ever will. I will test their money back guarantee next week.

Hopefully when I get back home! Need to get it cleaned up and zeroed in first. I will definitely post them when I have them. Note to all rats: I'm currently taking auditions for my next Rat Sniping Video!

I hope your rats are the size of house cats, or you wont be hitting them with your new Pistov. Hopefully you got a good one! So far all reviews are bad!
