Petition to Allow Laser Range Finders in Field Target Competitions

Hi everyone,

We’ve just launched a petition asking the WFTF to consider allowing the use of Laser Range Finders in Field Target competitions. This change could make the sport more accessible, inclusive, and aligned with modern shooting practices.

If you believe in making Field Target more open to newcomers, HFT shooters, and those with visual or technical challenges, please take a moment to read and sign the petition

I think i remember a fun grey area, but i also think I remember no lenses or something like that. Don't hold me to any of this.

Was it no handheld laser range finders? If thats the case my zulus isn't hand held 🤔 their power restrictions are why I won't bother with it. I only have 1 weak sauce gun and it's a 15 fpe 177. They told me to go buy another gun and join the fun. Restrictor plate 4 banger racing isn't worth my money, so to speak. And none of my 16 airguns fit the needs or the rules.

Im conflicted about this.......
Im sure it would add some points to my score. But.... it's one more thing to carry around and manage while your in the shooter's box and "on the clock". If you become dependent on it, then it dies during the match, you're back to doing it the old method anyway

Ive shot matches with some _very_ talented shooters. the kind of folks who only miss 5 over the course of a two-day match. Handing those kinds of talent a range finder could/will lead to courses being cleaned. Course designers and match directors will then start upping the difficulty levels to prevent that, making it even harder on shooters who aren't as proficient.

IMO there are other ways to grow the sport, but that's for another thread.......

Concurr!

Just posting the ranges would make more sense. Then the new shooters wouldn't even have to buy a rangefinder.

Of course, just making the kill zones square instead of round would solve any rangefinding advantage anyone had and make it the same no matter what scope you used.

But, I agree with Jim. Never gonna happen.

Why not just start your own organization and see how many people really feel the way you do?

Mike

There are a lot of good reasons to allow range finders in a separate class. Posting ranges skunks those who want the additional traditional challenge.

WFTF coordinates over many countries which restricts change.
The challenge for change/inclusion will be more of a cultural challenge against tradition.

Americans are far more receptive to change, or challenge authority or shake things up, for better or worse. We have 4 divisions at most matches, 3 recognized for competition one is freestyle.

just shoot unlimited or freestyle or whatever the class is that basically has no rules...
WFTF being an international organization which caters more to a global audience of competitors will most likely cabash / smash the idea if not just ignore it.

well we can ALWAYS make the KZ's smaller.

How much smaller can you really go? If you mean at distance well sure. Some of the MDs around here are already doing that due to the level of shooters rising. But we practice that way already so bring it on. 1" at 50yds fine. Id love to push myself and try a very hard course, well above whatever anyone has done. And not 3/8" at 55yds, been there missed that lol.
I dont shoot a Thomas so

When you range a target incorrectly you hit higher or lower of center. Round holes get smaller as you move away from center....squares do not.

wondering what this KZ does

Here is a calculated assessment for what happens when you don't range correctly at 12 fpe. It becomes significant beyond 3yds. If you are shooting at 20fpe it's even less.

Range error percentage at 55y

1 yard=2 percent smaller

2yards=7 percent smaller

3yards=17 percent smaller

4yards=33 percent smaller

5yards=64 percent smaller

6yards=100 percent smaller
