Permission Rant

Getting permission is hard work.

Best luck I've had was with a good friend who happened to know the owner of the hardware store and welding shop in a little town in central California's San Joaquin valley.

In the late afternoon, farmers and ranchers would drop by to chat in the back room at the store.....we'd hang out, listen to the discussions about crop prices, etc...

Shooting ground squirrels and coyotes would eventually come up...and pretty soon, "Why don't you come out to our place tomorrow?.....You can have the run of the place...."

One of the cattle ranches we had full access to was just over 13,000 acres.....

I guess it depends on the type of permission agreement. Obviously, the owner has a pest problem. However, because the pester (S97) is not being paid to eradicate the pest, the *permission* is a courtesy of and by the owner. Yes, the pester is doing a service, but I doubt any airgun pester ever eradicates the pests.

So, I have to disagree here. Pesters (myself included although I only pest in my own backyard) like killing pests and without pest targets, at least for me since I don't plink or shoot targets for fun, we pesters have a dilemma. Some people seek out *permissions* so as to have pests to shoot. Given that the airgunner is MUCH less than likely to eradicate the pest problem, the owner of the permission is really doing the pester (airgunner) a favor by providing the "targets" and range for free.

Anyway, yes, courtesy works both ways, but IMHO, the owner deserves the MOST courtesy because without them you would have nothing and nowhere to shoot.

JMHO and no, I have never shot pests on a *permission* unless you want to count my former neighbor who allowed me to shoot over his (he rented actually) property.

So, IMHO, the owner owes the pester nothing. The pester owes the owner everything.
I agree with you completely 9 times out of 10 these guys just want to get rid of the pest and don’t wanna fart around with an air gunner that’s not even gonna eradicate 10% of them. There’s no money exchanged. It’s just a landowner being courteous. And he really does want these pest gone theirs no airgunner that is going to make a dent! Who are these entitled people that don’t agree with that?

As I sit in my hunting camp, or a guess my permission camp so some guys will understand where I’m at, I find this topic interesting. I let several people hunt my place. I owe them nothing until they start paying the bills. The neighbor who lets me hunt his place owes me nothing. Over the last 30 years I’ve dealt with many things when I’ve walked into the woods my neighbor owns. Never once got pissed he didn’t tell me before I drove 5 hours to get here. Just happy to still be allowed to hunt there. Even if that year was a scratch. But maybe because I’m 55 and I’ve never felt entitled to anything unless I paid for it and it’s mine. Like someone else said. Those rats will be back so don’t burn bridges.
