Pellets at 190 yards, what’s the point? MOA at LOO00ooong…Range with the Red 🐺

About 10 years ago I spent an entire summer trying to shoot an MOA group with a pellet gun at 200 yards. I was getting up at four in the morning and illuminating the range with the highbeam lights for my Tahoe. I did that more than once. Finally after months of trying I shot one group that was significantly under MOA with my 22 rapid. The technology just simply wasn’t there.

I was catching up with the legend Alan Z This weekend. He told me he had been shooting one of his air arms 25 caliber pellet guns at 200 yards, he was just shooting them into the dirt. He felt like he was shooting groups around the size of a tin of pellets.

In addition to being probably the best Airgun tuner in the world, his best finish in field target was second at worlds. He can shoot, and he does not BS.

I assumed he was using 34 grains. He explained he was using JSB Kings’s….

Back during that summer 10 years ago, when I was trying to shoot groups at 200 yards, I also tried my rapid with 25 kings. They wouldn’t group within the size of a beach ball.

Fast forward to today’s newest technology. Shooting my red wolf on high power today. I thought what the heck!

first I tried out at 130 yds that’s a 10 shot group…It was time to go long.

it was 150 clicks to go from 100 yards to 190.

here are 20 some groups shot in a row. The bottom board was shot first. It was grouping much better at that point. The top board was shot right at dusk, dead calm conditions, 90+ degrees. You can see it shoots better with a slight wind. I don’t think the pellets can figure out where to go in dead air. That’s my highly technical explanation.

I had a blast. I think I could’ve hit a tin can almost every time.

The smallest group was just slightly under MOA.

Three of the groups were hovering right around MOA.

CRAZY!!!

That’s really incredible shooting Mike. I got to visit with Allen this weekend too and he told me about his dirt clod shooting session. I’m excited to get my custom rifle from him so I can try more super long range shooting. It’s not going to be a .20 after all because the LW barrel wasn’t that good. It’s going to be a .22 FX liner inside of the drilled out .20 LW barrel. I can’t wait to see how I do at that great a distance. Again congratulations on your success at extreme range and thanks for sharing the adventure. Who ever would have thought groups like that could be shot at such a distance with pellets!! Wow.
