pellet tolerances - at a glance

NOTE - this only includes JSB and H&N in the limited sizes i buy.

so far , every tin i have received , when sorted by head size . come out with generally 2 head sizes as per pellet gage. since that is down to 1 / 100 th mm . every JSB and H&N tin has been like that , along with predator polys.

weight , however , can be another matter. i find with JSB , a tin which currently is both 25 and 30 cal. will have a spread of 1.3 g in total weight. this is consistent whether it is 25 cal 25g , 34g , 34g MK2 or 30 cal 44g or 50g all tins have this spread.

as for H&N i only have the 25 cal 30g pellets. i did find they have an apparently tighter tolorence as the spread was only 3/10 of a grain for over 95% of the tin. this tells me H&N are more consistent out of the tin.

granted , me being OCD any JSB tin will be sub divided into 6 groups based on head size and weight groupings. and with a simple fine tune will shoot real tight groups every time. yes , it is boring to sort , but you pay good money for them , you may as well get the most out of them. and if your gun loves H&N , an extra benefit.

Thanks for this - I sort a sample from each tin to confirm that the labeling is correct and to do a spot check on the consistency.

I shoot sorted pellets for sighting in, testing, serious target shooting and hunting. Most of my shooting is straight from the can.

Next summer I want to do tests to relate head and weight variations to POI changes to determine what the "window of acceptance" is for serious shooting.

Being O.C.D. and A.D.D. everything is perfect right now but that is likely to change real soon. LOL!

Cheers and Merry Christmas!

I just casual plink and pest in my back yard. But I sort my pellets just by weight. H&N FTT .22 cal 14.66 grn. I get about four different weights 14.6, 14.7,14.8 and 14.9. Then I just start with the lite pellets and work my way up. I have not tried different head size. These are 5.53 Dia. but my Benjamin Marauder pistol with the Marmot Militia barrel will shoot pellet on pellet at 22 yards. That’s my back yard range. Let me tell you. I’m shooting the hell out of some mice 😂
