Pellet speeds

G’day Mick. Distance has no bearing on muzzle velocity but I guess you’re asking how far can they be shot and retain accurate and what is the optimal speed. Even a 500mm M4 can shoot 18 grain pellets way faster than you would desire for accuracy sake. Generally, pellets shoot best at below 950fps. JTS or AEA 22 grain pellets seem to be the hot ticket for longer range and more impact energy and a 700mm easily has enough juice to send those supersonic.

Thanks for the information, I’m just learning how to tune the M4 for different pellets and Slugs, when to increase regulator pressure, what starting position on the micro wheel and such, so I’m asking the experts, cheers.

Make a post in the PCP section and you’ll be more likely to get some guidance regarding tuning. I would suggest setting the reg at 90bar, macro in the middle, valve at 4lines and then dial up the micro from its lowest setting until you get a speed of 900-920. That’s not the optimal way to tune but it’ll get you started with 18grain pellets.

Note that the macro simply jogs the micro by a few clicks, so the micro is the “master” controller of the hammer. The macro is used to provide presets for different projectiles, such that, with the tune described above, you might be able to turn the macro from your set point of 8, down to 6, to shoot lighter pellets at the same speed. Then quickly switch back to 8 to return to the original setting.
