Pellet sorting, variance and results

Hi Guys,
I just got a .25 Impact from AOA (Thanks for testing before sending!). Trying to get the most out of my Impact I started out sorting pellets by weight while I waited on my PelletGauge to come in and I was impressed with the early results (See Below). I will be testing the sorted vs unsorted Heavies later this week.

I got the PelletGauge a few days later (thanks for the fast shipping!) and there was very little variance in head size of the JSB King and Heavy King MK1 pellets. Almost all the pellets fell into two sizes but the weight variance was surprising.

Tonight we sorted about 150 pellets out of the same 300 pellet can of JSB King Heavy 33.95gn and we found two different head sizes of 6.37mm and 6.38mm. We weighed the 6.37mm pellets and found 13 different weights so far ranging from 33.0gn to 35.0gn with approximately 25% of them weighing 33.8gn, 25% @ 34.1gn, and the rest spread out over the other weights with only a couple pellets at the extreme ends.

The JSB King 25.39gn were close to the same with 9 weights (did not sort by head size) with most pellets weighing 25.5gn and even distribution in pellets between 25.2, 25.3, and 25.6gn with a few as low as 24.8 and as heavy as 25.9.

Results:

JSB King 25.39gn pellets but I was shocked by the variance in the JSB King Heavy 33.95gn

All groups were fired from a cleaned barrel, with regulator and valve control left on factory settings.

JSB King 25.39 pellets, 5 shot groups, shot from Lead Sled Solo in the prone position, power setting 3.

50 Yards 2-3 MPH wind 90 degrees right to left:
  • Unsorted: 1 1/8" group
  • Sorted 25.5gn: 0.5" group
75 Yards, no wind:
  • Sorted 25.5gn group 1 - 1.25"
  • Sorted 25.5gn group 2 - 7/8" with one flyer that stretched the group to 1 13/16"

JSB King Heavy 33.95 pellets, 5 shot group, shot from Lead Sled Solo in the prone position, power setting max.

75 Yards, no wind:
  • Unsorted pellets group 1 (4 shot group) - 0.75" group

I would add that there certainly can be variances in pellet weight I would suggest you take the readings from those little pocket scales with a grain of salt. Most of them are not consistently accurate, I would often weigh the same pellet five times and get 5 different readings.

So unless you using a fairly high end scale I dont think I would separate them by their individual weight but group a couple weights together like 25.5,25.6,25.7 for example...

Just a suggestion.
