Pellet shortages... grumbling and complaints within

..worldwide shortage of shipping containers crosses all products...

I've seen this argument but I'm not sure I buy it.

I have a 8x16' storage container. And it would hold a heck of a lot of pellets on pallets. And at 16 feet, it's a rather small storage container.

Maybe I'm drastically underestimating demand, but but I'd think a surprisingly small # of storage containers could hold enough pellets to meet the US demand for quite a while. We're a pretty niche market, even more so when talking about those of us who mostly shoot good (read expensive) stuff like JSB. Again, might be totally out in right field here, but I'd suspect many more cheapo pellets like Crosmans (Walmart) get sold in the US than JSBs.

All of my comments are pure conjecture, just like every other time we see folks speculating on this strange shortage.

I manage a warehouse in E-Commerce shipping. Shipping has containers from China 6 to 8 weeks behind. Manufacturing Stateside can't keep up with demand so I assume other countries can't either. I won't get all political on you but if something is available and you want it.... DO NOT HESITATE! I am not a kook, this is a friend to a friend industry scoop. the ownership of warehouses in 3 states (coast to coast) said FILL THEM NOW for 2022 based on his at the top knowledge.

Prepare for war in time of peace. Other word, you should have had a stash when things were normal. Living on the edge. Tons of shooters feel this way. Your prize toys sit idle because of poor planning. Man in the mirror.

Or because of prolonged drought! I had quite a stash when things started getting tough on powder burners and it's lasted me quite some time, but it's coming to an end. (And previously I'd been accused of being a hoarder...).

With the current demand for pellets, that 16' storage container is a drop in the bucket compared to current demand. The mfgrs can make well over a million pellets each day from one factory and they cant keep up! Just a few years back, the demand was no where near this high, so why would the mfgrs expand their tooling? It takes months and big bucks to crreate new or additional tolls for making these pellets. We need to give more time to allow mfgrs and shippers to catch up!

Thought I'd have some fun with some napkin math.

Not at home near a case of pellets or the 16 foot storage container so rough estimates from memory on dimensions......

A "case" of typical large tin JSBs takes up roughly 576 cubic inches (12inches long x 8 inches wide x 6 inches high). Within that case there are 30 tins (6 "sleeves" of 5 tins each) @ 500 pellets each so 15,000 pellets. Or, in the case of a million pellets like you suggest, 66.67 cases (1,000,000/15,000).

16foot x 8 foot x 8 foot shipping container is 1,769,472 cubic inches (192 inches x 96 inches x 96 inches).

So a 16 foot shipping container could theoretically hold 3072 cases of pellets, just by volume. That would be 46,080,000 (15,000/case x 3072 cases) pellets (over 46 million).

In reality, of course they can't fill a shipping container to the brim, because the top cases would crush the bottom cases, and I do believe the overall weight of the container might be a bit of a problem. So, assuming they only fill the bottom with pallets roughly waist high like we see in the pics Predator international shares, lets call that half of the volume of the shipping container. We're still looking at 1536 cases of pellets, or 46,080 tins of pellets, or 23,040,000 (yeah, 23 million) individual pellets.

Lots of pellets in a shipping container. I've got a decent supply, likely more than most, and I still can't fathom how it would take very many shipping containers of pellets to keep up with demand. of such a niche market.

While there has been a pellet shortage for a while it has not affected me in the slightest. I have over 10,000 pellets that should last me at least 3 to 5 years. Just ordered some from pyramyd Air the last month and only took 3 weeks to ship. Some pellets have more issues than others namely JSBs. Others not so bad as H&N seems alittle easier to get ahold of some.

Anyways for me a rule I've always had is to have at least a 3 year supply of pellets at all times. It used to be quite a bit more but for now a very generous amount for me is 3000 a year. Yes I know some of you might shoot that in a few weeks or less and while a few years back I could have probably done the same I just simply don't have the time anymore to do so. Maybe once a week I can shoot and if that 50 pellets is alot. Just no time between work and family.

However always having enough supply is important. I always bought some during the big sales from PA or AGD just to be ahead of it. Couldn't imagine having to limit my shooting simply on not having the ammo.

In regards to the napkin math wiz....if there are one million airgunners that require pellets each month and they use 3 tins every week.....etc....yep I believe there are more than a million arigun folks looking for pellets, so that means mfgrs cant keep up with production! Before spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on new tools and adding on to their factories they need to know if this demand will keep going. My guess would be one of those containers might supply the US market for mabey a week at best??
