Being fairly new to airgunning, I was curious about these so called “pellet pens” out there that supposedly help in loading and seating pellets. Are these things really useful and helpful or basically a waste of money?

I don't think I've ever actually seen someone use one (pellet pen) and I've been shooting since 1990. Now some ( not many) guys still use a pellet seating tool.....come to think of it, I can only think of one. I personally don't think it's necessary.

I think they work pretty well, if you're using it for a springer. For $10 or $15, they're pretty useful as far as I'm concerned. You probably wouldn't need it for loading a magazine.

Mine found it's way into the junk drawer. It just didn't work out like I thought it was going to.
It doesn't work on a lanyard, and if you stick it in a pocket it will either get a ball of lint in it, or you'll break it when sitting down or bending over.

Bought one, and now it's added to my never-go-to drawer. I think it would be great for a break-barrel piston rifle. I tried it with my single shot Steyr, thinking I might squirrel hunt some with it. Even though the loading opening is large, I'm still not able to consistently load into the chamber. In a hunting situation, I expect I would get one in the rifle and about 3 on the ground, meanwhile the squirrel is gone. There are other ways to carry pellets that work better.

I have one, and it is not a bad way to carry a small number of pellets in your front pocket. However, it won't work well to push in or seat a pellet, even in a break barrel. I have something similar (but better), called the Peli-can, and much prefer it. It holds enough pellets for a match, dispenses the pellet easily into your fingers for loading, and has a seating probe on the end (I never use that). I use it in airgun matches, filling it with enough sorted pellets to shoot the entire match.

I use one exclusively. Can't think of an easier way of carrying and loading for a break barrel gun. I carry spare pellets in modified ink pen barrels that I can quickly reload the pellet pen with. The pen I use has an integral pellet seater if you need to do that on your gun. Here's a couple videos of me using the pen and reloading.

I use 2 one for my Diana 34 and Diana AMO3 and one to load my FX magazines. I spread a pen/pencil clip to fit on it and keep it handy in my shirt pocket. At almost 70 years my hands are stiff and lacking the dexterity I once had. The key for me was attaching the pencil clip. I find it difficult to load my Airforce Talon .22 with my fingers or with the pelpen and will endup selling it. I have no problem using the pelpen and I fill it by holding a handful of .22 pellets in my left hand and pushing the pelpen in to the pile only inserting the pellets head 1st into the pen. But I cannot load my talon with it.

My pellet seater is actually a .243 centerfire snap cap, I use it on both Weirauch 177 & 22 break barrels and especially on the Steyr five shot bar type magazines, works great!

I don't understand why so many have such an issue using a pellet pen. I use my Diana 34 for hunting small game, particularly squirrels, on a regular basis. I had a real pain of a time with the old dig a pellet outa your pocket method when hunting. There is a need for an easy and quick method for reloading when hunting. Target shooting?........who cares. I bought a pellet pen and tried it out. After the first day using it in the field, it became quickly apparent it was the way to go. Fast and precise reloads, with NO fumbling around. I love it. I carry it in my coat pocket with no issues. It is THE quickest and easiest way to load and reload a break barrel. Honestly, it's too darn simple to mess up. I paid $13. Come on.......as much as or maybe just a bit more than a tin of pellets? Worth every cent in my opinion.

Yeah apparently they work out fine for some folks. The only way to know is to buy one and try it.
If I stick it in a pocket then there's the possibility of lint and grit on the end that I load with (I mean why bother cleaning pellets?)
If I put it on a lanyard then I have to hug the rifle in order to reach the breech. I can't stand a lanyard that hangs down to my waist. Plus there's no good place to attach the lanyard to it.
It just doesn't work for me when I am walking through the woods. And if you are just sitting in one spot then why bother with the pen? Just set a tin of pellets next to you and skip the malarky.
This works way better for me.

Yeah, I saw that pellet holder you made in the "other parts, accessories....forum" and commented on it. I think thats a good idea that you came up with. I can see it working pretty good. I was just surprised actually at how well the pellet pen worked for me. Of course that is with a break barrel. Now, if reloading an under lever, the pen wouldn't be the tool to use. I would probably want to try something like what you are using.

It doesn't matter what you use be it fingers to pellet pen to a personalized do it yourself. It matters if it works for you. If it doesn't it try something else. You load your pellet and the other person loads theirs. As long as it works for someone it is a successful loader. So I put a clip on mine, with one hand pull it out of my shirt pocket or cartridge pocket on my vest and use my thumb to push the slide to insert the pellet, then push a little harder and the next pellet seats the one just inserted into the barrel. A quick operation then clipped back into my pocket. Only on hand needed and With my stiff hands it successfully works great. I hope everyone has a method they like as well.
