Pellet accuracy

So today Mother Nature gave us in eastern PA a nice day, out comes the shooting bench and my brocock bantam sniper. This rifle has three power levels, with an 8.44 grain pellet I get either 760fps,900fps or 955fps. So trying to find the right pellet for a given power was a challenge. So I should state that the bantam is in .177. The first pellet was jsb exact diablo at 8.44grns. This pellet threw fliers at the two higher velocities. The next was h&n field target trophy at 8.66grns and it grouped well at all three power levels. And last was a sample pack of crossman premier 10.5grns from the very early 90’s when they first came on the field target scene. They shot the best at all powers. I’m a little stumped because all the posts I’ve read seem to praise the jsb pellets. My reason for the comparison is my desire to return to field target after a 25 year hiatus and not make a complete fool of myself right out of the gate. Anyone else experience anything similar?

Yes, Had a marauder that HATED JSB's. at 50 yards had a 10 shot group of about 14 inches. That was in .22. The Crosman Premiers and H&N FTT shot groups about 3/4 inch at the same range. Had about 10 different makers and weights that day. All 4 types of JSB were poop. Smallest group with them was about 4 inches.

Have a .177 Marauder now. AA and Crosman both shoot better than JSB's. Have tried most reasonable weights from 6 different makers. AA 8.44 and AA 10.3 shoot the best. JSB 8.34 shoot decent but just a little bigger group.

So the moral of the story, every gun likes different pellets. Try a bunch and don't just go with the latest fad on the internet for pellet maker. I don't doubt that many shooters get good results with JSB, but just not all of them. You have to know what your gun likes the best.

Good luck with getting back into Field Target. Still trying to get it going around here (Western Indiana). Have to drive 4-6 hours to find any good matches. Kind of discouraging.

Enjoy.

It would be interesting if some of these YouTube rifle accuracy test videos would disclose what pellet they are using just for curiosity sake. Unless it’s a video reviewing pellets they seem to leave that out. I’ve got a .177 Gamo Raptor gas piston rifle with a Hawke Vantage scope and at bench rest I consistently get a dime size groups at 20 yards using JAB 8.44 Diablo pellets. For a while I almost put the rifle in the closet and was going to forget about it until I tried a sampling of JSB pellets. It’s strange, the other weights of the JSBs give large spreads as other quality pellets. I’ve read a lot of articles but I haven’t found any good reason for the discrepancy of what pellet a rifle shoots well.

Jsb’s aren’t always the best shooting. My experience is a gun, mostly, either liked h&n or JSB but not usually both brands. Most of my springers like H&N’s. My pcp’s usually JSB’s. But it can swing either way. Crosman’s are random and are always worth a try. It’s so important to try handfuls of variations of pellets. It can make all the difference
