Peau Productions Lens Upgrade for the Hero 5

I recently bought the Side-Shot scope mount for GoPro Hero 5 and above to use for video. As most know the standard lens does not have enough magnification to zoom in on the scopes reticle requiring I would imagine doing zooming or cropping in the editing department. Plus the factory lens is a fish eye lens leading to some video distortion. Per Hajimotos suggestion I installed the Peau lens this afternoon and did some test video and things look promising. The reticle is pretty clear and with the FOV set on wide seems to magnify the reticle well. The video was done looking at an target about 45 yards in the shade with the ISO set at 400. I don't know if that needs to be adjust or is even available at the present settings of 1080P 120 fps. I hope this lens with the increase magnification will mean no cropping or zooming will be needed in editing which will maintain the quality of the video. This is all a learning experience for me. I presently have the video editing software Cyber link Power Director 13 which is an older version. I have not used it that much because it has a steep learning curve. Plus I need to upgrade to a better version that will handle 4k and higher frame rates. Bill

Your results are looking in line with what I would expect but the focus of the image down range is still a bit off. The issue that you will have is getting the focus of the camera to be in sync with the focus of your eye and parallax. It takes some tweaking but that image down range should be as sharp as the crosshairs. Using a remote monitor and making minor adjustments at a time while viewing the video feed is the only way to get there.

Once you have it so the level of focus on your videos is equal to what you eye is viewing, you make indicators or even tap that lens in position so as not to lose that sweet spot. As I have outlined in ANOTHER POST here on AGN because the GoPro has a fixed lens aperture the only way to control exposure is by Shutter Speed and ISO. 

Also please remember that the 8.25mm lens will afford you to capture at 2k and 4k with much higher quality results which is just not possible with a stock lens due to the small capture size in the frame.

I too just received my 8.x lens. I’m having a bit of a challenge getting everything dialed in (side shot mounted exactly centered on scope optic lens, Peu lens focused exactly on reticle, and parallax focus crisp but I’m working on it (thanks again for all your help!). Can I ask what you mean by “tap that lens in position”? I wondered about the possibility of the Peau lens changing focus once dialed-in. Thanks! Apologies for the hijack. Figured was still on topic.

AL.Hajimoto means to tape the lens in place to keep it from moving or rotating after getting it into focus. I cut as precise a hole as possible in some painters tape as to not cover up the lens and stuck over the lens ring and camera body. As far as not having the Side-Shot not centered over the scopes field of view I had that problem too. I did move the Side-Shot mounting scope ring as far back toward the eye piece area to have as much of the two mounting bayonets sticking through. That made the situation better. I am still in the process of trying to get the best focus but rainy weather here is slowing me down. Bill
