PCP Rifle Barrel

the inside of a centerfire rifle barrel is cut for a chamber, freebore, then lands and grooves. I guess there is no chamber cut into an air rifle barrel. but how about freebore. I hear of people shooting bullets in PCP rifles. do they have more freebore than some pellet rifles since a bullet is longer than a pellet? I would like to learn about this.

thanks in advance

Yes you have the idea correct. With an airgun barrel you have a freebore section that allows the pellet to be pushed into the barrel by the probe. I dont know how much longer the freebore is than the longest pellet for a given caliber is but theres some room. Then there is a lead cut into the rifling just like a firearms barrel. The lead is the taper in the lands so the pellet or bullet are slowly started into the lands. So if you want to shoot slugs in a barrel you first have to see if the freebore is long enough to allow the slug to be pushed completely into the barrel like the pellet. I think in most cases the freebore is long enough but I have read a few posts where people cut the freebore longer and made the lead a longer taper to make it easier to seat the slugs they were using.

You've got it just different words ( sometimes ) with airguns.
Your "leade" nee3ds to be correct for the pellet or slug you are shooting. Some factory pellet rifles/pistol need this portion polished or smoothed a bit for smoother feed. If seting up a barrel blank you can actually ( try to ) call you pellet on that area, I have one done exactly for JSB heavy. Had a 909 that needed this area opened a bit for longer slug to fully load.

So, where is the nearest airgunner to you? Best way to learn and have fun.
