Packing my bags for NM to shoot pigeons

Heading out Tuesday to shoot pigeons at dairies in NM. The first time I shot at this location, Dewey, Scott and I shot 430 pigeons. When I stopped to asked permission there were 3 pigeons sitting on top of a roof about 20 feet from where I stopped and they did not fly when we exited the vehicle. I knew it had not been hunted. The landowner was happy for us to shoot and said I could also shoot Coyotes if we came back that night. Did not have my night site stuff with me. Plan to take a few pics. Check out the new pellet pouch I made. I patterned it after the Beeman pouch. More to follow later. BTW, first time to post a photo and I must say this was a snap. Job well done AN! Chuck M

No. TSA requires a visual inspection in the tank. I took my FX500 to the airport and asked to speak with a TSA supervisor. After reaching this person, I told him I had questions about flying with an airgun. He said airguns are no problem because they aren't a firearm. I said I would like for you to look at it because this is not your average airgun. Once he looked and saw the carbon fiber bottle he said I would have to open it so they could see inside it. There are people I know that fly with their Bobcat or Wildcat because the air tube doesn't look like a bottle and they get by. I don't want to take that chance. I will be driving with my guns and tanks.

My father-in-law says Roswell area is one of the largest areas for sheep ranching and that place is infested with coyotes. I usually stop there to gas up/pit stop in Roswell on my way to Clovis at lease twice a year but I don't have the time to visit. When I drive through, I always see dead coyotes on the side of the roads. Some day I do want to make a drive there to visit.

Well, I live in Roswell, and there are sheep here, but not nearly what there once was. They used to be used to keep the weeds down in the pecan orchards, but you don't see them used for that these days. But... There are thousands of pigeons and Eurasian doves, both of which are unregulated.

I hunt on two permissions rather close to town (less than a mile outside city limits), and only because I know the owners personally. This said, the best places are closer to Artesia, and Hagerman, as there are feeds lots and dairies in the area. I've never approached any of them, but I don't see an issue as long as you speak directly to the owners, not the hired help unless you speak Spanish.

You might try Southwind Dairy. As I said, I've not talked to them, but the pigeons are a problem, as they are at Eco (sp?) Dairy. You're on your own in this respect.

If you run out of air, call me (575-626-4785). Other than a part time dive shop, I'm your only resource!

Thanks Alan for the offer of air. I know two you may be talking about south of town. I have thought about stopping there several times but haven’t yet. I am going just outside of Artesia. I did speak to the owner & he was the one that spoke about the coyotes. Very nice and seemed to appreciate our help. I do some leather work on the side and made a wallet for him. I like to take care of my permissions. I’m only hunting for two days and I have two bottles. Will have enough air. One is the great white. Look at the picture at the beginning of the thread at the pellet pouch I made. I have some smaller frames ordered that will be arriving in a couple weeks.

Arrived at the dairy are 4pm. Checked in at the office and he remembered us. Told us to get after them and we did. I believe we only saw 2 birds that weren't pigeons. Tons of birds here and in 2 hours we shot 91 pigeons. Would have stayed longer but I didn't bring my night vision equipment. I won't be able to post pics until I get home & reduce them. More to come tomorrow. Stay tuned.

Hello ,
I'm new to this forum. I do live in New Mexico. I have been trying to find permissions for years and can't get through the door. Can you tell me how you approach the owner and what you say . Do you bring your airgun to show them what it looks like so they know what to expect. Just need a little advice on how to get permissions . Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Robert

Zerox,
THE thing "I" would want to see is your insurance ! YOU would need proof my buildings, livestock, other would be covered if anything happened. I would also want you to sign a disclaimer absolving me of any responsibility should you be injured in anyway do to anything ........... .

Too bad the only thing I need removed are about 200 Turkeys and it's a real pain getting the required permit.

OP,

90+ in one day, outstanding.

John

Hello John , thanks for the response I'm pretty sure that the NRA insurance covers that . I didn't think that it was a lot of farms in New Mexico that you could do pesting at. You see the videos that Bwalton and the guys shooting at the dairies and I just assumed that there would be a lot of squirrels and rats to shoot at the dairies. I never heard of a Turkey problem on a farm . But I sure wouldn't mind making a trip during Turkey season with tag in hand helping you out with that turkey problem. Just say'n

Matt, Almost another 200 today. Spoke with the owner again today and he was happy to have us kill pigeons.I also do leather work for fun and I happen to make a really nice wallet. I carry a few of those around with me when I go shooting. I gave the owner one today cause I want to be sure he remembers me. Now to your question Matt, and thanks for bringing that to my attention. I had planned to do a short video showing my guns but i’ll just tell you. My buddy who is shooting with me is new to airgunning. He doesn’t own a gun so I provide one for him. When I go on a trip like this I want a back up. So my go to gun is an FX500, .25 cal with a Hawke Sidewinder mildot scope. I also have a sideshot camera set up which I purchased from the boys from Utah. Works great so if you need one contact them. They also advertise on this site. My second gun is an FX Wildcat, .22 cal with a Hawke scope. My back up is the (wait for it) FX Impact, .25 cal with a hawke sidewinder scope. I also bought the 26 pellet mag from the boys in Utah too. Brilliant! I only have one bad thing to say about it....I ONLY HAVE ONE. Now I’m not using the Impact because I shoot the 34 gr MKII and that’s a lot of lead for a dairy. I shoot the 25 gr in my 500. We added another 179 pigeons today. Will post some video after I return home.

Robert to your question. You just keep on asking. I am an old man and perhaps they think I will be more careful. I do tell them that I’m very careful and shoot at many dairies and feed lots. A few have told me no. Some want me to pick up all the pigeons and I don’t want to do that so I shoot other places. What part of NM do you live?

This forum is awesome !!! People actually talk to you on her rather you are a new person to the forum or not ! Thanks for responding . I live in Albuquerque. I don't mind driving in New Mexico . Just not out of state . I don't know to show up with guns or with nothing . I don't know if they care to see the guns or not . I need 1 permission to tell any potential other permission that I shoot elsewhere.
