P-Rod 58 yard brain shot

After deciding my new .22 Benjamin Marauder pistol not really the best choice for Extreme Pistol Field Target competition, but nevertheless impressed with it, I decided to drill-out the transfer port to bring it closer to 20 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. That went well, and 19.2 foot-pounds of 18.1 grain JSB is quite a potent air pistol.

After confirming she still averages 1" c-t-c five-shot groups at 50 yards, I replaced the (EFT-worthy) 4-12X rifle scope with what I feel the correct hunting scope, a 2-7X pistol scope; and sighted in at 30 yards. Thankfully I also checked the drop ar 50 yards before deciding to try a little real-world terminal ballistics testing, and confirmed the rig shot to same point of impact off my improvised Polaris rest as from bench-rest.

As is my usual habit due to aversion to animal suffering, I resigned to brain shots only. Parcel to that approach, I always hold slightly on the high side in order to avoid crippling, low misses (to the face or jaw).

The first shot presentation at about 30 yards went over its head; in my opinion much better than blowing a jaw off. The bunny fled, but stopped in shadows at a guesstimated 50+ yards. The sight picture was great though, the hold steady, and the trigger-break perfect.

The bunny piled up with just a couple weak kicks, indicating my attempted brain shot was true and humane. The lasered distance was 58 yards.

Not really into gory success photos, I choose the less gory side to photograph. The pellet entered one eye (photographed) and exited the other eye. There were brains between.

My longest air-pistol hunting shot yet.

its best imo to just buy a larger tp from a place like hill airgun .. it wont matter much on the size if you do nothing else, but along with turning the hammer spring a bit stiffer youll get quite a bump in power, i gained about 100fps with 14.3s .. didnt lose much on shot count, it still gets about 2 clips in the sweet spot ~2700 - 2000 .. if you start drilling other things bigger valve port etc im sure youll get it down to 1 mag pretty quick ..

Sorry Guys, I forgot about posting this and don't look at the hunting section very often. Hopefully answers are better late, than never. My testing notes will answer several questions-

Stock Gun
18.1 grain FX, power adjustments maxed, 3150 PSI, 20 shot powerband- Lo= 623, Hi= 662 ES= 39, SD= 11, Avg= 649 FPS/16.9 FP

18.1 grain FX, TP drilled to .091”, 3150 PSI fill, 16 shot powerband- Lo= 674, Hi= 704, ES= 30, SD= 10, Avg= 691 FPS/19.2 FP

It's very quiet Fig, especially for the power level. In fact the shot report belies the power.

Main reason I decided against it for EFT is due to the light heft, and less than "telepathic" trigger action, S. Although the trigger is very good and can be monkeyed better, and extra heft can be added in several ways, I just decided it is too great a hunting pistol as-is (now) to not use it that way. The bunny shot only reinforced my decision. Nevertheless, I reserve the right to revert back to my original plan of Huma regging and monkeying it for EFT.🐒

Except one, your questions are answered in this post Jonah. I did nothing else than drill out the brass transfer port. You gonna try to attend the 2022 Texas Airgun Show in September, Jonah?

"you may have just boosted Prod sales a bit". Being the founder and foremost promoter of Pistol Field Target competition, I've sold Crosman many 1720T models based on my recommendation. Everyone who's asked "what pistol should I get for field target?" (and there are many), get my standard response, "Unless you're willing to spend over $1000, the 1720T is the ONLY pistol to consider". Now I'd say the same about the P-Rod for anyone wanting an Extreme Field Target or high-power hunting air pistol. So yes, I expect to sell many P-Rods for Crosman.

I have a two-by-four mounted above the steering wheel of my Polaris Ranger, Matt. It's enough for a small sand-bag to rest a rifle or pistol on. A very deadly arrangement... without leaving the drivers seat!:D

Fantastic, Ron. 😊

You're a real AG pistol nut
• with the trophies to proove it, and
• 5 (five!) airgun books published,
supporting US companies (Crosman),
• inventing and jumpstarting a new gun sport,
• and killing pests with surgical precision.

🔸A pillar of the AG community.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Matthias 😊

🔹 Here's a thread I found that lists Ron's books:

Thanks for the compliments Matt, but I ain't nothin' special. Just smitten with airgun addiction/compulsion/mania; and have always prioritized time, room, and opportunities to indulge them. Correction- OVER-INDULGE THEM! But being a Realist, I harbor no delusions of normalcy.🤪

Most people have a life; but as evidence of my lunacy, I wouldn't trade places with anyone. Well, maybe High Hefner.👯‍♀️🥴

WAIT! Is he still alive?

I wonder how many airguns can fit in a casket.🤔

On second thought, maybe a BIG TOMB...

That photo was taken for my Airgun Chronicles book years ago Matt, and represented some fraction of my airguns then. Didn't have an AP16 then, but still have it (in both barrel/chamber lengths). Did sell my AP700; sometimes wish I hadn't. BTW, mausoleum is the term I couldn't recall at the time (midnight), but did recall upon retiring.

I've already paid for two tables at the Texas AG show Jonah; the most he allows. With it being three years since the last show, I've accumulated a lot of airguns to CRAM on my tables. Suffice to say I intend to make a BIG showing, will have quite a selection of unique and one-of-a-kinds, and price many to move. Hope you can make it, J. If so, I'd like you to shoot my Crosman 180-
