I place my rifle scope up when the case is closed and resting on the floor. table, in the vehicle. my thought is that if the gun case is dropped the lower portion of the rifle will take the hardest hit and save the scope innards some of the sudden stop. When the rifle is carried "upside down" and the case is dropped the weight of the rifle is driving the scope down inside the case to strike the case wall with the entire weight of the rifle . Especially if it's in a canvas case. But this is my personal opinion and my father's teaching. I wonder how Military 1000 yard match shooters pack their rifles. Might be worth investigating since the have extremely good equipment.
