OUT OF UP

My new Wildcat sniper 30 with Athlon 4-14x40 mounted and tried. ran out of up adjustment on scope. 30yds initial try. also found that scope sits to low on rifle, have to really push my face hard into cheekpiece to get a full picture.

Ordered FX taller and adjustable mounts, hope that does it. One bright spot was that although 3 inches low with scope maxed out, I put 3 shots thru same hole, do love the rifle. did have a mag problem but will post that in proper venue.

Agreed, adjustable elevation rings will take care of it. However I just wanted to comment that it is unusual to run out of elevation at 30 yards. I would be inclined to look for something either causing the barrel to droop or be pulled down, or something causing the scope to be angled upward. Could be something like a burr or piece of debris trapped somewhere or a loose fastener.

Can you post a photo (showing a side view) of how your scope is mounted? I’m really not too knowledgeable here, but I just thought about this. I had something similar happen when I brought a scope to the range to test a rifle I was buying. I’m not sure if what I’m about to share was the issue, but I hadn’t reset the turrets from the last rifle I’d used the scope on. So when we tried to sight in the rifle I’d purchased, we ran out of elevation on the scope. The rifle grouped fine off target, the shots were off because we could not zero the scope after running out of elevation. This was at 25 yards. Could something like this be the case in your situation? Before mounting the the Athlon, had you reset the elevation and windage turrets to the middle of their minimum/maximum settings? Or did this occur with a new scope? I’d think that taller mounts for elevation purposes should really come into play when you’re shooting out further than 30 yards. Also you don’t want your objective bell touching your rail, shroud, or barrel so your rings should be high enough to keep your scope off of them.

Having to push your face hard into the cheek piece sounds like you’re not within the suggested range for your scope’s eye relief. Is the picture black around the edges? Is the object your trying to aim at off center when you look at it? If so it sounds like an eye relief issue. To troubleshoot the issue decock your gun and set the safety, set it in a rest and try moving the rings back a little on the rail closer to towards the butt of the gun while you’re looking at an object through it at a distance equal to your parallax setting. Use one hand to hold the scope onto the rail while the mounts are loose and check to see that the image is clear while your cheek is against the stock. Make the adjustment to where you can comfortably rest you cheek against the stock and have a clear view through your scope. If it’s not possible to move the rings (or mount) back any further because of your magazine or you run out of room on on the rail, loosen your rings and slide the scope back closer toward the butt in the rings. Be careful not to scratch your scope in the rings. You’ll also likely need to re-level your scope once you get it set this way. Just some things that came to mind when I read this.
