they are indeed thin aluminum bottles with carbon fiber wrapping. The aluminum provides the bottle but the hoop strength to hold high pressures (carbon is of course really good in tension)

anyway, a deep gouge is of course worrisome if it damaged the carbon. Having said that, that area is by nature thicker so it could take a bit more abuse. There’s also other reasons why an outside scratch may be ok but, honestly, after spending all that good money on a gun, why would you not just be safe and get a new one? All the internet advice won’t help if it fails.
