Opinions on rear cocking bullpups?

Hello AirgunNation Peoples,

What is your opinion on rear cocking bullpups? Besides being a tad slower, I personally don’t have a big issue with them.

I agree with you. It doesn't bother me at all and might actually prefer them when shooting from a bench.

That all depends on the overall quality of the bullpup. I highly recommend the Taipan Veteran, even though it is rear cocking. I thoroughly enjoy the Vet's accuracy, excellent trigger, low report (very quiet), simple magazine, easy power adjustment and smooth lever action. The Vet has been trouble-free for me. And, I am able to shoot 34 grain slugs accurately from the .25 cal's LW barrel.

The Taipan Veteran checks all the boxes; except the rear cocking -- which is no deal-breaker in this case.

In any event, I understand the next generation Vet comes with the forward lever. If Taipan produces this one in .177 cal, count me in. I already have the .22 and .25 calibers.

They all cock backward/toward the rear...

Just some behind the face, some in front.

The two I have are in front, but I don't see a problem with the lever in the original location as far as the receiver design.

The human body is a wonderful thing, it can adapt to a great many things if the owner lets it..!

Taipan Veteran has been my only rear cocking gun. It was the one thing I hated the most about it, but the rest of the gun made up for that. I was still always desiring the ambi-side-cocking lever of the R5M. I personally would never buy a rear cocking gun again - the stretch to cock it totally takes you away from you relaxed shooting position. It's an uncomfortable stretch.

It doesn't bother me. My Cricket is super accurate. I would put it up against any other brands.

Rear cocking bullpup aren’t a big deal once you get used to it and get into a rhythm.

Rear cocking on cricket bp did not bother me until I got a vulcan.

I found the side lever cocking is much better than rear cocking off handed or bench rested.

Doesn't bother me at all either and It's not a deal breaker. How fast do you really need to cock and shoot anyway? 

I have a Veteran long .22 and a Cricket .25 and use them when crow hunting which is fast and furious at times. Never really an issue.

There is something to be said for a bullpup that you can shoot, never lose sight of target thru scope, chamber another round, then shoot again quickly and efficiently. Forward cocking pups are very nice and in my mind they have an edge over the rear cocking pups. The Uragan and Vulcan are at the top for me. 

I do appreciate and enjoy the Cricket, Veteran and Matador R3 & R5. It’s not at all cumbersome or annoying cocking them. However, when it comes to speed or even precision; the more efficient and less movement/reset between shots the better

I've never had the need to rush to cycle the next shot, I still shoot break barrels along with my pcp guns...

I believe that if you have to adapt to a setup or "I'll get used to it" then the gun doesn't fit you right from day one. The gun should work you, not you for it. It really isn't the gun for you and there is a gun out there that will fit you perfectly - and it probably will be the one you least expect.

If I'm standing or walking around, rear cocking is fine. But when I'm leaning the gun on something it's nice to be able to use a forward cocking gun and keep your eye on the target.

Rear cocking would only bother me if I was hunting Cape Buffalo or lions. In the airgun world there is never a "need" for a fast follow up shot. I certainly didn't pass up the pleasure of owning a Taipan because of how I have to cock it. Its a pellet gun.

Never say never, there are times when pesting that a fast follow up makes the difference. To stay on topic... I still won’t consider rear cockers, just like some won’t shoot a bolt gun, because they prefer a lever. Thank goodness we get to choose.

I'm not opposed to a rear cocking bullpup but my preference is for a mid-cocking action. Depending on the type of pest I'm shooting, it's nice to have a quick follow up shot and mid-cocking bullpups work for me.

My opinion for what it's worth. I don't care about speed of a follow up shot as much as being able to keep watching my target in a hunting situation. I love my Daystate Regal, but cocking the bolt can be finicky at times. I have it mastered now, but shooting my Air Arms with a side leaver is so much easier. But as Vetmx said I don't hunt dangerous game with my air guns. My biggest drawback on some bullpens is check weld placement and scope height.

I don't mind a rear cocking as long as its designed to be changed for right and left hand shooters but I hate it when they are for right hand only.
