Open sights are fun!

I was plinking cans the other day with my stock Benji Maximus with open sites and really had a great time. I have not done that in years, having always preferred having scopes on my FXs or AirArms, shooting from a bench. I felt like a kid again, reminds me of all the fun I used decades ago with my trusty Daisy Model 25. You should try it some time if its been a while!

Yes I agree its fun and nice to go back to basics now and then, no compressors, tanks, magazines, scopes. Just cock, load and shoot. Three in the bottom of a can 55 yards with my HW95 luxus and williams peep sight.

Yes I like open sights and iron sights specifically. Just a preference - probably reflecting the fact that I do nothing but plinkIng and seldom have a chance to shoot at a really distant target. For whatever reason I find iron sights satisfying even if my eyesight isn’t good enough to use them effectively for distant targets.

I have a TalonP with open sights. Very accurate - I just point it at what I want to hit and as long as it’s not too small or too far away, i can hit it. I currently have a reflex sight but hate that it’s battery powered so I am trying to get an iron sight pair that will work with the two-level rail setup of this gun. The front sights have to be very high profile to work with any rear sights on this gun. I have an acceptable front sight and am waiting for a used micrometer notch rear sight to come from ebay.

I had a fiber optic type rear sight but it was weird and way off to one side - no matter how far I adjusted the windage it wouldn’t center.

Also tried a peephole type rear sight but the small hole of course requires you hold like a rifle and it seems to me that the larger flip up circle isn’t quite the right size to be useful as a rear sight on this pistol.

I am determined to turn this into the ultimate plinker. It’s a pistol, kind of, really powerful, iron sights

Good morning Sonny

Allow a quick diversion, please.

Can you tell me more about the type of strap you are using,

It does not look like a standard rifle strap

Thanks

Ed

I love throwing a can or two out in the lawn and plinking them with iron sight guns! It is very fun and relaxing when I’m not trying to hit the same pellet hole 🕳 all the time. I also like chasing those plastic practice golf balls with iron sight guns. I am still seriously considering a low powered .22. Spring gun (HW30S) and keeping it iron sights for just that purpose. I think the low power and larger pellet will really make those cans jump!

I couldnt agree more! I dont shoot scopes on airguns anymore.

I said the same thing years ago. And fully meant it. I love open sights, grew up shooting them, and would prefer to use them in many cases today. But if you are like most humans you will reach a point when your eyes will not allow accurate shooting with open sights, whether you would like to use them or not. And a scope CAN provide more precise shooting than open sights.

I recently had Cataract surgery. I see PERFECT now. Ya can't hit what you can't see.

During stay at home, I shoot Iron Sights at basement 50 feet. I now have 7 rifles equipped. Some are peeps, fiber optic, and notch/blade. All are fun and accurate. I can't pick a favorite. I also have a expensive SigSauer red dot. It's the same one reviewed by Tom Gaylord's blog at Pyramid. Battey lasts forever and is conventional easy to find battery.

For some reason I can’t get used to the idea of “turning my airgun off” before putting it away so I am determined to find some battery-free open sights that work well on the Airforce TalonP. Need a very high profile front sight and a good amount of elevation adjustment on the rear in case the front sight is a little too high (or isn’t high enough). I also have a hard time spending hundreds on sights, so my options are limited.

Again I also have to ask: what does a $235 reflex sight have that at $35 reflex sight lacks? Accelerometer to turn off when not in use would be nice - but those are dirt cheap. $5 item at most. Maybe precision of adjustments and breakage resistance? I need to learn more about this because I am rocking a $35 Chinese reflex scope and I can’t find anything wrong with it.

Is this just like premium sneaker brands? Mainly brand / finish and customer experience I mean, or is it like the difference between toy and “hobby grade” devices? Air guns come to mind or a different example - cheap drones or RC cars may look a lot like more expensive ones but the sacrifices are HUGELY obvious if you’ve flown a decent hobby grade aircraft or driven a serious RC buggy or truck.
