Results Open Grove Results 12/11 & 12/12 – N50 & USARB

We had such a strong showing this weekend that multiple relays were required to accommodate the 21 shooters - it worked out great.

First timers Tony & Barbara Pellegrino took the long drive up from San Diego area as well as Mike Bricker, Matt & Abdul drove down from Sacramento area. Mike Niksch won the long distance award coming all the way from Colorado.

Thank you to everyone that brought goodies to eat; Donut boys, Vipha fed us good, Joe bought us pizza & Gabe brought drinks. Photos coming from Eugene and others. Thanks to Hector for the pistol rest he donated to the club.

Thanks to Tim McMurray (Mac1) for helping Joe score and of course Joe for hosting.

These are amazing scores, fun to see how well airguns run against .22's. Arguably, .22's have a hundred years knowledge and accesibility, but at similar investment $$$ , airguns are running right along side of them.

The difficulty in getting quality .22 ammo can have a lot to do with this, but still airguns can shoot.

Diablo Rod and Gun is starting a N50 match every 2nd Saturday of the month, starting in January. Concord, CA for those who want to participate.

Yeah Oak, that's great your club shooting N50. Similar to IR 50/50 we do best edge scoring so the scores will be higher for the Pro guns. The Pro Slug airgun is hanging in there too. I know of a few other slug airguns that are warming up. Yup, BB guns are getting really good.
The top 5 scores are surprisingly close in each class. As expected the Pro & Sportsman are a little bit better – but still close! http://national50.org/results/ . I need to point out, on Saturday, Mike's pellet gun nearly matched my Pro Myers, both score and X count, and his score was higher than Dan's incredible 40X in Sportsman class.

Thanks Jim, that's a really good Myers. I stole it from JoeF about 8 years ago – so I've had some practice. This weekend I stole a bit of great ammo from JoeF too – my score showed that. I think that moved up to 3rd right behind Mike's Slug gun.

I forgot to mention I messed up Doug's 2nd match placement number. The order is correct. I'll fix it manana.

Great shooting and scores. I really like looking at the results for various calibers and gun manufacturers.

Lou - I clicked on one of your links for N50 rules and scoring. I decided to re-read the rules and scoring sections. I’m embarrassed to say I have been incorrectly scoring ‘X’ values for about one year now and posting my practice cards on AGN. I thought that for my DS Safari and RAW, which I shoot pellets and sometimes slugs ( with the Safari); that to receive an X you just need to touch the X. Pellet class means you have to completely cover the X ring with the .035” plug, not just touch it. I think I got mixed up between Pellet and Pro class on the scoring of X’s. Pro class means you just need to touch the X ring with the .224” plug. Anyway, I understand now how to correctly score each class in terms of making the X value determination. I know Mike N told me this, but I got confused and have been scoring ‘X’s’ Incorrectly.

Now I know why you don’t score your own targets. Good thing mine are just practice cards. 😀😀

Barbara and I want to thank EVERYONE at the shoot for helping us learn the ropes of this great sport. Being first timers can be a little overwhelming and confusing at times, but not with these folks. We met Joe, Lou and Bob, Saturday evening and they walked us through what to expect and a few of the rules. For us, it was cold and the wind was a HUGE learning experience. Neither of us had ever shot with flags and trying to learn how to read them was pretty hard if I do say so myself. It's been a long time since my fingers were that cold trying to pick up a small pellet and getting it loaded.

Both Saturday night and Sunday Bob ran the range and he did a great job!!!!! Not only was he running the range he was also keeping a watchful eye on Barbara and I helping with a bit of coaching when we needed it. Sunday Bob had his hands full with all of us....Lots of people to worry about, keeping the walkway clear while one relay was shooting and the rest of us trying to soak up what little sun there was in the morning to try and warm up. Instructions were clear, to the point and safety was always maintained. Thanks again Bob!

A thank you to Doug and his wife Vipha for loaning Barbara and I a set of flags and walking us through how they set them up and how to read them. A very big help on Sunday with the wind.

Joe.....I have shot and taught at many nice ranges and I will say your range is top notch!!!!! It shows the commitment you have to this sport and the people who shoot there. We are all lucky to have such a nice range to shoot at....Thanks for caring!

So on the long ride home in LA traffic (No idea how people do it) we talked about how much fun we had and how great the people were there. We definitely will be come up again to shoot.

Thanks much to Joe and Lou for inviting us all from Team Centercut. We got spanked but it was great fun and we totally enjoyed ourselves. There are some amazingly talented Benchrest shooters there, lots to learn just watching those guys. And everyone was so friendly, what at great experience. We’ll definitely be back.

Oh and thanks to Tony and Barb for keeping me awake on the 4 hour drive home. After about the first two hours Tony called and I happened to mention I got up at 3:15 am to make it up to the shoot after having gone to bed at midnight, and I was having trouble staying awake on the road. So Tony and Barb talked to me on the phone about everything and anything the rest of the drive home to keep me from falling asleep and getting into a wreck! Thanks Pellegrino's!!!!

Steve123, thank you. As I've said before we have world class champs here so "they tend to drag you up in class". See youngster Abdul's scores.
JoeF is replacing his pea-gravel with empties. Some have said, "the more you practice the luckier you get"
Magnify that area by at least 20 to visualize the scope. There has to be more that 200K. You'll believe me when you come over for a shoot.

Mike B, good you & Gabe made it again and good to meet your friends. They nice.

Ah yes, that's the kind of landscaping we PB shooters prefer!

I don't know if I could handle the humiliation of the low scores I'm capable of if I showed up there. Using USPSA pistol classifications as example, it'd be like competing against High Master's/top 1% in the world, while I'm just a C class shooter. But if it wasn't so far away I'd sure consider it since it'd only be a learning experience at best, and well its always a good thing to meet and hang out with nice people, which includes Team Centercut of course.

Tony, it was a pleasure having you both here, and thanks for the nice compliment on the range. It was a fun cold weekend for sure, with the both of you shooting very well for the first time, nothing to be embarrassed about. Barbara had some bad luck come her way on the last card in match 2, and happy she finished the card. Shooting over flags can be overwhelming at first but it is a key element for success. Bob did a great job running the matches, and am very grateful for all that shoot and help here. It would be hard to keep up without their help.

It was nice to see Mike Bricker here along with Gabe, nice pics that Mike posted.

Hope to see you all again in the near future, have a wonderful Christmas.

Joe

Steve123 - some foolosophy I've learned.

don't know if I could handle the humiliation of the low scores I'm capable of if I showed up there.

Of all the real benchresters I've met, ZERO will look down at a newcomer or one that had trouble on a bad day. We all started new; we've all had bad days or longer slumps; some come to simply shoot and get better. No one that I know or have read about are ego driven people. You come alone with your ammo, rifle, equipment, your ability to judge the wind, and you decide when to NOT pull the trigger. It's not a foot race. You have no idea who is ahead of you or behind you - you are shooting against yourself. In the end if you did well you privately pat yourself on the back and prepare for the next time. So toss out your concerns & shoot.

Make this a daily read, you'll learn to see I am describing truth. https://www.accurateshooter.com/
