One and done?

To have a none biased opinion I guess one has to own allot of guns. Since you are a hand pumper I would believe it would be better to have a gun with a big reservoir, so you still get a many shots without the need to pump the gun to 200 bar. I have no experiance with handpumping myself, but among the ones you already have, is it easier to pump the royal with the bottle to 160-170 bar, than the wildcat or streamline to 200 bar? If that is the case maybe you should narrow it down to a bottle gun in .22 cal?

I really couldn’t say. The pumping isn’t the issue for me. I don’t mind it. It’s not fun but it’s not as hard or as much as a drag as many others make it out to be. Maybe because I’m 48 and in fairly decent shape (just above a couch potato but not as fit as Ironman 🏊🚴🏼‍♂️🏅ha ha!).

Maybe I just tell myself it isn’t all that bad to pump because I’m too cheap to buy a tank/compressor. Or maybe I’m just too lazy to do the research to find out what I should actually buy? 😂😂😂. (I’ll go with the first suggestion).

Anyway, I usually pump back up to full (220-230 bar) for the most shots before I have to pump again. Fortunately, at the moment, I have a local airgun buddy that has been very generous to supply me with a tank (4500 psi CF SCBA)!!! Yeah, it helps to know people. THANKS SCOTT!!! (If you see this).

If adjustable power is not a must then I would also suggest a Wolverine R HP. My .177 shoots 16.2 JSB's at 30 FPE, is super accurate and gets 90 or more shot per fill. It also shoots NSA 15.5 slugs as good to fifty yards. (that's as far as I shot them). It might be more accurate than .25 Wolverine R HP at fifty yards and no wind.

It sounds like you have some very nice rifles already. I agree with the folks that recommend an air source. I was hand pumping until the day after I pumped up my .25cal Dreamlite - I was sore the next day and decided that the hand pump would move to backup/portable duty. I bought one of the Altaros booster pumps (already had a shop compressor). Here's the thread that sold me on the unit:

https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/altaros-booster-compressor-review-ongoing/

I used it to fill my new Avenger rifle to 300 bar today...the thing works like a champ, and it definitely makes shooting that much more enjoyable.

If I was looking for a rifle instead, I have to say the Dreamline series rifles are great. I really enjoy shooting my .25cal DreamLite, and you can buy barrel + probe kits to shoot different calibers. It also has lots of adjustability (hammer spring, externally adjustable regulator, "power" wheel). I have a power plenum for mine (tube reservoir), but I haven't finished playing with the rifle the way it is now. It should increase the adjustability and make the rifle more flexible.

I have never shot a Taipan, but I always seem to read a lot of great things about them. Maybe I'll get lucky and have a chance to shoot one some day.

Best of luck!

I'll echo everyone else that is suggesting a fill source. Up until the beginning of this year I was hand pumping and it wasn't bad at all. However I decided I'd try the tank route and wow it has changed my shooting experience. I don't count mags anymore to conserve air I just shoot away! I went the used SCBA route and got 2 for under $250 each. I could've gotten away with one but the added capacity is nice.

As for the one airgun thing, I've actually downsized my collection recently. Only reason I did it was because I figured I can only shoot one at a time plus I'm a bit of an anti-packrat. Basically halved my airgun fleet but admittedly I've replaced one with a new powderburner! Anyway if I choose just one PCP it'd be my Lelya in .22. It's just hard to beat its compactness.

I see a used Wolverine HP on the classifieds. Loooooong rifle! I'm thinking I'd go the standard power level OR a true UK spec sub 12 fpe gun. Now THAT is tempting. The trend here in the US is to bigger, faster, stronger.... I don't really want or need that. However your 30 fpe.177 sounds pretty trick. That could be cool too. It's just the length that isn't #1 appealing to me. Is the.177 as long as the 22 and up? I assume it is.

@buckyusn Ah yes, I have heard of the Altaros booster. Haven't looked into it much. Is that designed to fill the gun directly or could a larger tank be filled with it? Might be too much work/heat to fill a large tank?

I am starting to think that a fill source OTHER than the pump might be a good idea. Well, I know it IS but, like Bogey47^^^^^ states above, a new rifle is more glamorous. And if you know me, I'm all about glamorous! Ha ha! NOT.

Yeah, a tank and fill source is the way to go.

But let's not stop here! Any other pcp suggestions are desired.

I like the Leyla suggestion @AirgunnerPCP. A compact beauty..... that describes my wife to a T! 5 foot one and full of fun! I like compact awesomeness! Good things really DO come in small packages.

If your wallet is feeling froggy, buy a compressor. If you mainly shoot at home, you can skip the tank and fill straight to the gun.

Let the gun thing simmer for a little while.

I’m with Intensity. I know the new gun is more glamorous but sometimes practically is the best answer. A new kitchen would be great but if the septic tank doesn’t work, wouldn’t you repair that first.

You need an air source that will all of your Pcps more enjoyable.

Are you guys conspiring against me? Ha ha ha! Good advice fellas, good advice.

Septic tanks and drain fields and drain pipes and..... Yeah, I DID all that already. Well not the tank but I did (myself with my 11 year old son at that period of time) replace the drain field (gravity system) and all the drain pipes under the house (old cast iron and galvanized). Wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be but even doing it myself cost me $2500+. Money well spent and NO ISSUES since. I'm not having fun flushing the toilet but it is nice to not have to even think about it. Guess a tank and compressor would be kinda like that. Not fun but nice not having to think about how I'm going to get my compressed air fix. 👍👍👍

Wow, I'm not sure I could be of much help. I have different airguns for different purposes (mostly hunting). You might want to look at a timeless PCP design with good support. Since you mostly plink, RAW? If you want to know my real answer, ditch the pump and get a CF tank and maybe a compressor if you don't have a dive shop nearby and then buy more PCPs'.

RAW! How did I miss this? Check this out. USA made. DUH!

Just my opinion but the idea of "One and done" is kind of a tough one. I guess one must ask himself what he will be doing with the gun a majority of the time. Mostly bench shooting or hunting? A combination of both? What type of hunting? From the back porch or will they be lugging it in the field?

Traditional rifle, bottle gun, bullpup or semi-bullpup? Does the manufacturer have good customer service and do they have parts available to back it up? I think one must own or have owned and sampled a wide variety of PCPs' to make that decision.

The funny thing is that new manufacturers are coming out with a whole new line of PCPs' and the old airgun companies are trying to keep up with new or revised offerings of their own. It never ends. For me, variety is the key.

Until someone sends me a taipan vet or wildcat mkiii, I'm going to say my 22 crown compact, lol.

Light, smooth, accurate, crisp, balanced. I just would not want to fill it with a hand pump!

480cc bottle? That’s what’s on my Royale

The shorty Crown.... NICE!

Indeed! Did you upgrade to the carbon fiber bottle? I wish I'd had a royale to compare mine to, but I can tell you I still get 960fps with 16gr pellets in the 15" barrel. (131 bar). With supreme accuracy. And that barrel weighs something like 8oz? I want to say. It's crazy 🦋☁️

I have considered trying a 300cc fx bottle on it. But hard to justify close to $300 for lower shot count and a little less weight.... BUT would make a lot of sense for hand pumping

I do have a 580cc if you really want a workout 😂
