One and done?

Yes, it's the dreaded "If you could only have one" question AGAIN. HA ha ha!

I have some nice FX rifles... Wildcat (177) Royale 400 (22) and Streamline (22). All great rifles, I love them.

I guess I'm getting bored so I'm starting to look around at other pcp guns (brands) to see if there might be something else out there. I have often thought about seriously downsizing my airgun stable to just one pcp and maybe 2-3 spring guns. I just can't bring myself to sell my stuff off. I have worked hard and saved to buy what I have and I get attached to it.

I'm starting to think about downsizing (I go through this 2-3 times a year in my head but never sell anything) and I'm wondering what that ONLY ONE pcp would/could be for me (if even possible).

I'm a backyard plinker. I take an occasional rabbit or pest out but 99% of my shooting is non-living reactive targets and paper. I'd guess 90% of my shooting is done at 50 yards and under but occasionally I stretch it out to 100 or a little more.

I don't need a lot of power and anything over .25 cal or 30ish fpe would be too much (I feel) for my situation. One feature of a couple of my current guns that I find that I really like is the adjustable power. It’s nice to be able to turn the power down and make it really quiet and get a lot more shots. I’m still hand pumping just so you know. 🦾🦾🦾

Based on that information and YOUR personal experiences, what pcp would you recommend IF I could only have one???

Just say the price cap is $2000. Budget friendly recommendations are ALWAYS welcome but not limited to the less costly equipment.

Thanks for entertaining my thoughts!!! I hope everyone is doing well and getting lots of air powered shooting in these days.

Wow, I'm not sure I could be of much help. I have different airguns for different purposes (mostly hunting). You might want to look at a timeless PCP design with good support. Since you mostly plink, RAW? If you want to know my real answer, ditch the pump and get a CF tank and maybe a compressor if you don't have a dive shop nearby and then buy more PCPs'.

To have a none biased opinion I guess one has to own allot of guns. Since you are a hand pumper I would believe it would be better to have a gun with a big reservoir, so you still get a many shots without the need to pump the gun to 200 bar. I have no experiance with handpumping myself, but among the ones you already have, is it easier to pump the royal with the bottle to 160-170 bar, than the wildcat or streamline to 200 bar? If that is the case maybe you should narrow it down to a bottle gun in .22 cal?

Taipan Veteran (specifically the "Standard" length) in either .22 or .177

I have one of the CZ barreled ones, bought from R&L a few years ago before Utah Airguns jumped on the bandwagon and before Taipan went to the LW barrels.. Mine is a .22 Short.

Based on your adjustable power and hand-pumping requirements.....

Other than the Daystate Redwolf that I reviewed, my Veteran is my most easily power adjustable airgun. Very repeatable. Simple to do. Doesn't even need removed from the stock. I used to chrono test after adjusting power, but it was always spot on where it needed to be. Up until recently, it usually lived just under 20fpe and is very impressive with the JSB 13.43gr pellets at that power level. Something like 80-90 shots from 240-120bar. The other power level I use (and currently have it set for) is just under 28fpe with the JSB 18.13gr. One full revolution of the hammer tension adjust takes it from 19.5fpe to 27.7fpe. EVERY. TIME. Too simple. About 50 shots at this power level from the Short. Shot counts should be better for the Standard version (longer tube/longer barrel). I have two different listings in the Strelok app on my phone. One has the 20fpe tune and fps for the various pellets that it shoots well (JSB 13.43, JSB Hades, JSB 14.35) and the other has the data for the fps of various pellets with the one revolution in from the 20fpe tune on the power adjust.

Tubed gun so better for hand pumper than a bottle gun.

Rock solid. Good trigger. Dependable POI. etc, etc, etc (all the good things Vet owners are always extolling the virtues of).

The Short will do 32-33fpe but it's wasteful on air and has a louder report that I don't like. 28fpe is about the max for efficient power output for my Short version.

I think a .177 in Standard length would be even more versatile. The JSB 16.2 and 13.4gr pellets in .177 should be pretty sweet in the higher range of the fpe you're talking, 10.34 in the 20fpe area, and then all the lighter .177 options for as low in fpe as you want to go. A .177 would also be more competitive in Field Target than a .22, so, like I said, more versatile than a .22, at least for your stated uses and goal fpe output.

Edit: While I was typing this, multiple others also suggested a Vet. That should tell you something.

I have a Taipan .177 standard shooting 10.34 's at 950 fps,a ,25 standard .25's at 957 fps and a .25 long 34's at 910. If I could only have one and wanted it to do what you want I would get a .22 long. It would be a better multi use choice than my RAW HM1000x in .22, even though my RAW is more accurate. My .177 Condor ss set up with a Altaros regulator and cf tank is the most adjustable and shoots 16.2's at 950 fps. It has more than that added to it,but no need to list it all. Benjamin Benjamin, out?

Wow guys, thanks!

I see a trend appearing with the Taipan. Sure wish that I could get me mitts on one to handle.

Yo, you always come up with something out of the box! 👍🏼

I’m thinking a more practical idea (as suggested) would be a bottle and/or a compressor. Maybe I’ll have to start saving my pennies.

The adjustable power (or not) isn’t a total deal breaker but I have been spoiled with having it so easy to change. On the Royale and Streamline it literally takes only 3 seconds IF that long.

I am really having fun with rolling these things through my mind. Maybe someone could set up an airgun rental service so we can try before we buy type of thing? Order what we think we want an try it for a couple weeks and ship it back. If we want to buy the majority of the rental goes towards the purchase of a new rifle of any make/model. I know that I have seen something similar for trying different camera lenses. Some of those lenses cost as much or more than an air rifle.

Anyway, keep those suggestions coming! I really do appreciate EVERY one of them/you.

...predictably my vote would be for the one I have, a TalonP reconfigured to an Escape, in .25...

...I bought mine 18 months ago, and it has been accurate, light, rugged, and reliable...

...when I bought it, it was as my "only one ", although there was a Beeman P1 still around...

...and I had pretty much forgotten I had that Daisy Avanti Valiant (CZ 200T) rusting in a safe...

...I had ignored it as inadequate for any kind of field work but it turns out it would make a fine urban back yard sparrow plinker...

...I would not want that as my only one though....the Escape does pretty well on sparrows...

You’re too practical! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 And I should probably take your advice about the tank and compressor.

A really good compressor to carry me through a lifetime of fills....

^^^^^ +1^^^^^

You guys are making TOO MUCH SENSE!

If I could keep only one of my PCPs, the Taipan Veteran Long .22 cal would be that rifle. My use of these airguns mirrors yours and the Vet Long in .22 caliber fits the bill.

No brainer: Taipan Vet for sure

Taipan Veteran Compact and the LCS sk19 are the ones that for me have been the most fun.

Taipan Vet compact because I never have to fiddle with it and it shoots the same consistently and reliably, thus more fun. How compact it is makes it very versatile.

LCS SK-19 because it's accurate and select fire. The bottle gives a ton of shots.

Taipan taipan taipan.... that’s all I hear is Taipan. Taipan this, Taipan that, Taipan blah blah blah.... ha ha ha! Yes I am seeing a trend here. I REALLY wanted a Taipan but $$$ didn’t allow it when I wanted it and then the Wildcat came available when I DID have the money. I’m definitely a WC fan. Sure would like to try the Taipan so I could know for sure for myself. I’ll have to consider the Taipan.
