Thermal overload sensing in a motor is via thermistors that are integral to the motor windings. They are buried in the layers of copper windings. Won't be able to get at them. The thermistors OTOH are connected to a thermal cutout relay which is usually integral in the motor starter. The starter CAN be replaced. Regards.

Yes, starters incorporate large capacitors. Does the capacitor have any signs of visible damage? They can swell and even burst the can. It could also look burnt or have a burnt smell.

, if you determine the starter capacitor has failed be real careful to get the proper nominal replacement in terms of voltage and capacitance. When you install it also make sure you get the polarity correct. It will be an electrolytic capacitor and they have positive and negative terminals like a battery.
