Odd FX Dreamline Air Leak

My Dreamline was loosing air, so I tore it doewn this morning to see if I had an o-ring go bad. They all looked in good shape, but it was loosing 100 BAR overnight, so I knew there was a problem somewhere. I took the air cylinder off and raplaced the 0-rings on the block, the fill end and the 2 O-rings on the Huma Air Regulator. I aired it back up and it was leaking from the fill cap, even though it had a brand new O-ring. I rremoved the cylinder again and inspected that O-ring and it looks good, so I put it back together. This time after I aired it up, it seemed to be leaking from the pressure gauge at the end of the fill cap. I snugged it down but it was still hissing. This is where it got weird... I sprayed some soapy water arounf the base of the gauge to see if I could identify the leak. Then I just rinsed the area with water to remove the soapy water and dryed it off. At this point, it stopped leaking! So, I aired it all the way up to 230 BAR and am letting it sit. It's been an hour since filling it and thus far, no air has escaped. I'll let it sit overnight and see where it's at tomorrow, but it sure seemed odd how an obvious and audible leak just stopped after rinse soapy water from the end of the air cylinder.

IIRC there is an o-ring seal under the pressure gauge on a Dreamline (?) In that case, tightening the pressure gauge too much will result in leakage. Getting it tightened right for a seal is kind of a balancing act - not too tight and not too loose. And well lubricated.

It sounds to me like the pressure gauge was not tightened optimally, and then maybe some of the soapy & fresh water got into the threads and wet the o-ring in the sealing area. It may stay sealed, or it may start leaking again.

I would de-air, remove the pressure gauge and lube the o-ring with some silicone grease, re-install the gauge a little 'loose' (just where it makes contact when tightening, then about 1/8 turn more) and see if it then makes a proper seal. If leaking you should still be able to turn (tighten) the pressure gauge in small increments until a seal is obtained.

Looks like the gauge O-ring was the culprit. I didn't need to wait overnight, a couple hours was enough to show a significant drop in air pressure. I removed the gauge and replaced the O-ring with a new, lubed O-ring and aired it back up and it's been about 5 hours and it's holding steady! The gauge O-ring was visibly smashed, so your diagnosis was spot on! Thanks again!

I have a leaky situation (Maverick Compact in .177), one coming out of the barrel (should be the Valve Pin Seat O-Ring?), the other is when I remove the bottle, the plenums don’t hold the air and leak all off from the bottle holder stud hole…

Waiting for the O-Rings kit delivery…

Thanks for posting, as the response on sealing requirements is helpful…
