Nutter #16 takes his medicine

The first shot is one I got last week. He spooked and ran up the tree, hiding behind a branch when I slid the back door open. But he was made, by his tail poking up. I dialed the power down to Low, (12.5 FPE) left the camera running and stalked around behind the tree. Took a body shot, to limit penetration. The shot was up at a steep angle, so if it DID penetrate or miss, the little .177 pill wouldn't cause much damage on the return trip to Earth. But the shot hit its mark. Unforch, the nutter made it off somewhere I couldn't find him. I suspect he died in the hollow of the tree next door. I guess I should've stalked around further and risked being spotted for a chance at the head shot, eh?

We've had a warm snap up here for a few days. Suddenly, it was 60s. Today, back down to 20s and snowing lightly. The songbirds showed up in force to pack it away in case we've got more winter ahead of us. Then this guy came and scared them away.

I noticed him out the back window, digging in the lawn. 'put the Compatto into service again, and let a Baracuda Hunter fly. Went in the top of his head and out the back. You can see in the video that he was still breathing (although braindead) at the end. By the time I got to him, he wasn't breathing, but his heart was still beating. That was an odd sensation; never felt the heartbeat of a squirrel in my hand before... I went back to the rifle and put two more in his chest. I can't eat him since they're not in season any more, so I may as well use him to test ammo penetration. On low power, they did not penetrate through the body, like they did the head.

"hokieben"Smauge, just curious, have you taken any squirrels with your Benjamin Summit?
Yes. I took probably 3, but 2 were not the best shots. I think I've only got this one on video. I got him a little further back than I wanted, but it still got a lung. He fell out of the tree moments after he went off frame from this video:

Another one was spined, and another one was a perfect double lung shot. I'm not confident enough with that gun to go for head shots, even at 10 yards.

You can see the impact from the .22 knocked him right down. (though he did get up and run) If it had been a PROPER hollow point, (made of soft lead for expansion) it would have been even a quicker kill.
