Nutter #10 took her pill this morning

I got up early this morning, and put a chicken in the crock pot for tonight*.

Just as I finished that, I glanced out the window and saw a she-nutter working the grounds under the squirrel-proof feeder. I decided to try a head shot with the .22 Hammerli 850, its preferred ammo. I rolled the high speed video, braced on the sliding door frame, and released the medicine. The JSB 14.3 entered the back of her head with a high-pitched whack, and she fell down on her face. A short breakdance ensued.

In the video, you can see where the pellet hit the grass behind her. I heard it hit a tree in the background about a half a second later.

She didn't quite slow that 28 FPE pellet down enough for my comfort level. They ricochet off of frozen ground if they're going too fast upon exit; the angle is just too shallow to have a lot of extra power without a solid backstop at 90° to the pellet's trajectory. I'll be going back to the .177 Compatto with H&N Hunters at 13 or 17 FPE for squirrel size and smaller from now on. I'll reserve the hammer for raccoons, possums and skunks.

In other news, my next-door neighbor has bought a new cat, and she seems to want it to be an outdoor cat. She loves prowling around my back yard, and I haven't decided what to do about it yet. It's a nice cat, but it's only a matter of time before it starts using my wife's vegetable garden as a litter box. I'm thinking maybe the local raccoons or coyotes will make a meal of her one night.

Please forgive the low res pix at the end of the video. I downsized them for uploading here, forgetting that they'll look terrible at full screen when appended to a video.

* Crock Pot roasted chicken:

Seasoning mix:
  • 1/2 tbsp paprika
  • 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp multi-purpose seasoning (ex. Mrs. Dash)

1) wash and pat dry the chicken
2) Rub it inside and out with the seasoning mix.
3) Put some chopped root veggies in the bottom of the crock pot (or 4 balls of aluminum foil, if you don't have veggies on hand) to keep the chicken cooking indirectly
4) Cook on low for at least 8 hours
5) come home to dinner after work. (maybe add a salad, for some greens?)

"BigTinBoat"Nice shot Jeremy. In normal speed it looks like the pellet just skips off the head. I told you it was "deceptively" powerful. I never tried the polymags in it, those might slow down on entry.
I tried PolyMag and PolyMag Shorts, they both shot about 5/8" groups @ 14 yards, compared to one-hole with the JSB 14.3s.

Roald suggested I also try the 15.9s, he said they're usually the best. But in practice, I read another account somewhere that said JSB 14.3s were best out of his.

I'm sure you tried the 15.9s when you were testing; how'd they do? The other account I read said they were close to the 14.3s, but not quite there.

I also tried the H&N Baracuda Hunters and RWS Super H-Points, neither of them shot worth a damn out of it. I think it's just another confirmation of the old statement that the harder a gun shoots, the fewer pellets it shoots well.

As for being deceptively powerful, it does have a fair bark, even with the "muzzle brake" on it. I'm not deceived any more, hehehe.

How's my ol' Marauder coming along? I sold the custom stock the other day to a field target shooter down in Alabama.

I did try the 15.9, but to be honest I don't think I gave them a "fair shake". I had gotten a tin in a trade and they didn't do well. After I had gotten my Mutant I tried them in it, and they didn't do good either. I then started looking thru the tin and like 1/2 of the pellets had out of round skirts. I read that those had soft skirts and I never bought any more.

MRod is coming along. Regulator arrived yesterday. Been taking the stock slow. I've got it down to 1lb8oz and I haven't decided whether I'm going cut the center out of butt or make it like the one below I found on-line. Saw you sold the stock, quickly too. You made out better in the long run by selling separate.

If they didn't shoot well, I don't think I'd blame the skirts. JSBs in general have thin, soft skirts. But I believe they pressure blows them open to form a tight seal with the bore. More likely is that it just didn't like them because they were just a smidge too heavy for its twist rate or something.

I like the BSA-like stock treatment. If you do yours like that, it will REALLY look killer, with that "Made in the USA" marking on the right side of the receiver.

I thought I might do better by selling separate, but if one can find the right buyer, one never knows. Bad luck to me, since you're a lefty, hehehe. I could've sold it to you for $20 less and made the same money.
