NSA .22 cal, 17.5 grain slugs for Maverick Compact

Thanks so much for the reply! It is interesting cuz I got 2 other responses, one from NSA and one from Utah A.G. One said .2165, the other said .217. I think I am going with the experience here because I believe a larger diameter slug will give more contact with the barrel(even though it is smooth bore til the end). Better contact should mean less wasted air. Its different with pellets cuz there are 2 contact points(head and skirt).

One last question for you- Did you need to "single shot" these (.2175)slugs or was the magazine OK for loading into the breach? That is because the slugs are small. I noticed some issue with the .22, 21grain, .217 H&N slugs in my magazines but the FX hybrids looked OK(duh!).

Yes the 17.5's work in the magazine. Here is a quick test out at 50 yards in my backyard. This is with a 600mm 22cal superior liner barrel. This 17.5's are the top 2 targets and the NSA 20.2's are the bottom 2 and the middle left. I ran out of time. I have shot the NSA 20.2's many times and the top right target is usually 1 hole at 960fps. This is only the 2nd time I have shot the NSA 17.5's.

Nice looking rig there! I have an Element Helix 6-24 coming on Saturday. At 50 yards, those are good groupings. Shooting fast, too! I have the 500mm barrel now but want to try the 800mm if/when it comes out for the Maverick. I have switched to the FX pellets from JSBs, too. At shorter distance, they seem to be more accurate. I'm interested in the 17.5 gr NSA cuz they should allow minimal changes or regs and HS to get the accuracy I want for shooting longer distances.

You have been very helpful......mind if I follow your posts? I'm in West Tennessee and the airgun stuff really hasn't caught on here like it has on the coasts.

I'm at 145/115 with the lowest setting on PW1 at 880fps with FX 18's. You setting is very efficient for what you are currently shooting. When I had the 500mm 300cc bottle set-up I kept mine at 130/100, but I shoot a variety of pellets and slugs. Most of the time I shoot the FX 25.39's which are very impressive in these guns. I also have a 700mm 22cal barrel as well. Reason being I originally had a compact and a Sniper in 22cal, but I converted the Sniper to a .25cal and kept the 2 .22cal barrels for just the one and bought a 480cc tank. Honestly I wish I had kept the Compact just the way it was. I went squirrel hunting with it last fall and it was very easy to carry.

I will also confirm the .2175 17.5's work well in my Maverick Compact. My Compact started life with me as a .30 cal, so my internals are a little different, but at 105 bar on the second reg, I am running the 17.5's at 955 and they are grouping very well. The .2175 20.2s group even better though at 925 fps. My Maverick runs as both a .22 and .25 with various barrel lengths and projectiles, so I have a lower/moderate tune that allows me to dial the wheel and not mess with anything else and push the .25 JSB heavies at 930 fps (700mm barrel) with laser accuracy, the .25 Hades, .25 NSA 26.8s, the .22 NSA 17.5s & 20.2's, JSB and H & N 18.1's, as well as .22 Hades, and even the Crossman .22's with very good accuracy, all by just turning the dial from 1-7.

I am using 5,6, and 700mm barrels in .25 and a 500mm barrel in .22, along with a Koi Donny and larger bottle (480cc) for the 500mm set ups. I found the Tanto and Sumo moderators did not group as well as the Koi in the 500mm barrel and the larger bottle doesn't work with anything larger in diameter than the tanto/koi.

The maverick is an awesome platform that seems to shoot most things well with minimal fuss.

Here is a few I did this afternoon. I still have more slugs that I have yet to test. This first one has NSA 20.2's at the top along with H&N 21grains on the bottom middle and right. Also tested NSA 23 grains on the Bottom left and middle left. Maybe the H&N's need to be shot at a faster speed, but at 930fps I wasn't impressed. The top left ground is .36 inches.

This target groups with FX Hybrid 22grains at the top 2 and the bottom 3 are NSA 24.8 in .217. The Hybrid groups are 1/4 inch or so at 50 yards at 945fps on the left and 972fps on the right. The NSA had a good group in the bottom middle, but the flyer on the bottom left was the slug. I probably need to test them at a further distance than 50 yards. Anyhow, thought someone might be interested in slug shooting from a Maverick 22cal.

Good stuff there! Looks like a couple of flyers in the 17.5's.

Have you ever looked at/tried the Griffin slugs? Many different types and weights. Heard about them recently from an acquaintance.

Interesting stuff! Looks like they might improve the wasted air and fix the some of the speed variance that slugs have by better design.

My mistake...... I meant in the NSA 24.8's. The FX's all were tightly grouped

It looks like there was 1 flyer in each group of the 24.8's. These are all at 50 yds., right? Nice!!

BTW, got my Helix 6-24 today and will be zeroing tomorrow at the range. The 17.5's at .2175 are shipping today from Labadie, Missouri, so I should get in 1 or 2 days as it isn't far.

Hi Jlowe, i saw you mentioned you were shooting slugs on your fx 500mm 300cc bottle setup at 130/100 reg. Can you tell me what fx gun you have? Caliber? Slug grain and velocity? At that settings it seems i could only get the nsa 20.2gr to work at 900fps. Would like to know about your experience, thanks!

It's been a while but I had my Maverick 22cal Compact shooting 17.5's at 980fps. I could get 55 foot pounds out of it with a 34 grain.

Nice! I also have the Maverick compact .22. Getting 55 foot pound with the 34 grain, it's not from the 130/100 reg settings is it? Asking because i currently have that reg settings and wonder if it's capable of the 21gr slugs. Thanks a bunch!

Granted it's not from 130/100. I'll have to look in my notes.
