November 5 TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette Match Report

It was one of those too-few days so lovely that Maggyy wasn’t the only attendee acting like a young pup, and old geezers like me forget about their aches, pains, responsibilities and priorities long enough to thoroughly immerse ourselves in nothing but shooting delirium with like-minded airgun fanatics.🤪 Maggyy wasn’t the only soul running, chasing, laughing and absorbing the fellowship, but she took full enough advantage of the opportunity to not only wear out several of her favorite uncles, but (eventually) herself as well.

But, of course there was wind. However, yesterday just enough to make it challenging for airgun competitors without being obnoxiously so. Let’s say wind conditions schizophrenic enough that we could laugh about their nefarious nature, but direct most of the cussing inward.🤬

Eight competitors contested the idyllic-conditions matches. Most contested multiple classes, for a total of 18 score-cards fired over the course of three relays. All eight contested the 80 Foot Pound class, seven shot 35 FP cards, and three contested Slug Class.

As usual and as come to be expected, high score of the day was posted in the Slug class. Jim Martin shot an excellent 36/40 score with his .22 AGT Vulcan 3 to claim the Slug Class Match Winner hat-pin. He shot H&N slugs, and also also nabbed a ten-in-a-row pigs hat-pin for his fine efforts. Fine shooting, Jim! Suffice to say the other two slug shooters in the field were somewhat off Jim’s pace, and we’ll leave it at that.

Paul Bracaglia turned in an excellent 34/40 card, fired with his Aeon scoped .30 FX Bobcat shooting FX pellets about 860 FPS to win the 80 Foot Pound class competition. He also won a ten-in-a-row chicken pin in the process. Pablo is lucky to have that tack-driving .30 Bobcat, having rescinded his offer to sell it to some senile old codger after said codger hesitated about one nano-second too long pondering his finances. Great shooting, Pablo… but I’ll never forgive you for being too quick-witted for me!

Brian Stafford was second in the 80 FP competition. Brian shot an excellent 29/40 with his Nightforce scoped FX Impact, pushing 44.75 grain JSB pellets 860 FPS. Good shooting, Brian.

Aforementioned Senile Old Codger was third in the 80 FP class with a 28/40 scorecard. I… I mean, HE shot a Weaver V16 scoped .30 FX Wildcat MK2 putting out 44.75 JSBs 880 FPS.

Jim Martin (where have we heard that name before?) also won the 35 Foot Pound competition Match Winner hat-pin and another ten-in-a-row pigs pin. Jim shot an excellent 28/40 with his Athlon scoped Daystate Safari, pushing 18.1 grain JSB pellets 925 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.

Senile Old Codger was second in the 35 FP class, shooting a Bushnell Legend scoped .22 Brocock Bantam Sniper. As if to live up to his alias, he figured out all his pre-match practice had been done with the Sniper on its maximum power level (4), where it produces 40 foot pounds.😤 Thankfully he realized that mistake before taking my first shot after the match started; lest I’d have had to disqualify the old fool!🥴 SOC posted a 27/40 with the Sniper on power level 3, putting out 18 grain Air Arms branded JSBs at 935 FPS.

Brian Stafford finished third in the seven-shooter 35 FP field. Brian shot a lovely little Taipan Mutant wearing a Nightforce scope and producing 880 FPS with 15.89 grain JSBs. Good shooting Brian; especially given the power handicap in those tricky winds.

After the match six of us moved the party to a nearby Mexican restaurant for an early group-dinner, camaraderie, and (given the absence of Jim Martin) lying about our shooting prowess!:ROFLMAO:
