Not a Truthful Salesman to be Found

Well friends, yesterday I walked into a well-known airgun store with nothing particular on my mind. I was just moseying along when the store's salesman asked if I needed help. Well, I told him that I was just looking for the moment, but that I favored springers. As I was looking some over, he said that he had a special deal on a "good as new" Weihrauch 35E, still in the box. He spun me the story of how his technician put this tiny little scratch on the rifle while installing the customer requested Vortek SHO PG4 tune. He brought it out and had me shoot it a couple of times and saw that I was interested. He tole me that is was in a very unusual walnut stock, as most HW rifles are burch. It shot awfully smooth and the scratch was almost unseen. He told me that he could "give" it to me for a mere $629.00. Now my old, somewhat feeble old mind started sending out alarm signals. Hummm . . . that doesn't seem like such a deal to me. That stock certainly looked liked walnut stained burch to me. He then told me that Vortek had recently raised their prices to well over a hundred dollars. Now I had him, I know that Tom is still selling his kits for $89 - $99. That salesman, at a well-known airgun store, thought me a rube. I may be old, certainly not as quick as I once was, but I still shoot straight when talking to fellow airgunners. I'da made a mighty poor salesman, but I sleep pretty well for an old fart. I could hope that this salesman reads this and regrets trying to mislead me. He may sleep better. Yep, that's the truth. Orv.

The good news is that you got outta there without the regret of being 'taken'. Kinda sounds like an over-aggressive salesperson just trying to do their job IMO, but you were wise to see through the 'smoke' and live another day. Yes, his prices are kinda high (now that we live in an Amazon-type world) but keeping the 'brick & mortar' doors open isn't exactly free either. One thing I can't stand is untruthful statements (like the pricing he quoted on the Vortek kits) but I'm also wondering if you made any effort to 'negotiate'. If that's not your style, it's not really mine either. I, unfortunately, have my own stories from 'stealerships'.

Hope the experience won't keep you from going back for more 'browsing'! :)

The airgun retail business is tough. ~33% average margins on rifles that often require lots of post sales customer support. I don't know how much time (labor) is involved installing those Vortex kits, but lying to customers about the stock isn't cool.
They shouldn't be adding their labor into the price, even if they're a dealer. It's just common courtesy. The gun is technically used now that it's been gutted and upgraded. Probably voids any warranty as well.

I see alot of used rifles in the classifieds that have been tuned and everyone expects you to pay for their labor tuning their rifle. Doesn't work like that, should we be paying for your time you spent shooting it too?

I had no idea there was a real store you could just walk into off the streets that was air rifle dedicated. I'd be so excited I'd probably need a pair of Depends to keep from embarrassing myself. I'd be like a kid in a candy store.
Exactly. Only problem, I go in weekly. I buy depends buy the case. Ironically I’ll be in that store within 3 hours, got the depends on now. Crow

Ok not taking sides here, definitely not condoning retail sales lying tactics, but ....

Looking, and recently dealing with Vortek personally, at the Vortek website pricing on that kit With the Vac-seal included plus shipping , Yes you are well over $ 100.00

Now as to the Brick and Mortar Retail Store, Yes prices will be naturally a bit higher than many of the online options.
We all need to keep in mind an actual Store Front cost a helluva alot more than a $ 300.00 a year website.
No need to list all of the cost's of a brick and mortar store, we all know it ain't cheap.

As to "paying" for the time to tune a gun, and install a kit in this case, there absolutely should be an expectation to pay for this.
I know from personal experience it takes a LOT of time and work to dial in a springer, and the additional trial and error time to get that PG 4 kit "just right"

You don't go to a Dr. in box for heart surgery, that heart surgeon is a specialist, adequately trained, has the tools needed for the job, and that ain't free.

Again, i am Not busting the OP's balls here.

I would Love the opportunity to walk into a Local, dedicated airgun store, hell I live just north of the 4th largest city in the country and i don't have an airgun store withing 5 hours of me.
Yes i would happily pay a few extra bucks to be able to fondle, shoot, and feel, a gun before buying it.

THIS is exactly why i try to buy locally , even if it cost more . IF you do not support your local store they will not be there when you need them .
I am in Armature radio and had 2 stores locally they both closed because people would come in take 45 minutes time fondle a radio and talking the owners time . then walk out and buy from out of state to only save the taxes . No more Radio stores locally . JUST to save taxes !!!

I owned a free standing building with a retail business in sports. I used to work like two people to survive. I was going against store like Sports Authority, Sports Mart and a few other big box stores. I worked on service. 99% of the time I had excellent employees. We were one of the best. The odd time a salesperson would sneek in through the cracks. I got rid of quickly. Please don’t judge a business on one bad salesman. It’s hard to gain one customer, but when you lose one, you lose ten.
I don’t think most have an idea how much is involved owning a business. Not to mention risk, employee theft, rent, wages, Compensation, lots of hidden costs.
I hope most support local businesses, we need them. Crow

The devolution of Mankind is by design; and now happening at an exponentially accelerating rate.

On one hand I've been blessed to have witnessed Humanity at it's best (in the 1950s till the mid-sixties). On the other hand I'm cursed to be witnessing the moral decay responsible for the downfall of Mankind happening before our very eyes as you read this. You no longer even hear words like honesty, integrity, morals, ethics, respect... or self-respect.

Makes the saying "May you live in interesting times" seem like something between a supreme understatement...

And a bad joke!

🤬

Caveat Emptor. Having access to a brick and mortar airgun store I would advise a thick skin dealing with the help. Nowadays I need a thick skin to go anywhere! Everyone is pushy and knows everything. Thank goodness for great resources like AGN and airgun101. Research is half the fun of the rabbit hole! Enjoy the scenery.
