Hello everyone
I recently got Norica Titan spring air rifle in 4,5mm/.177, and being my first air rifle I just wanted to see what you think about it, and is it capable of some pest control, specifically rats, mice and European edible dormouse. From some videos that i saw, it is low powered, around 190 m/s or 600 fps. Is that enough to kill a rat or dormouse from about 10-15 meters of distance? Are there any specific pellets that would help the rifle perform better in terms of pest control? There are so many pellets that are advertised as "hunting", but I really don't have enough experience to tell which ones are the best. Should i go with heavier or lighter pellets, and is it better to use pointed or domed? I tried searching the forum, but there are no threads about this specific rifle.

I wouldn't worry about "hunting" pellets in that gun so much. Find a pellet that is very accurate and use that. Chance are that will probably be a standard dome or wadcutter. I find JSB or H&N have a high success rate for working in most guns. JSB more so than H&N

Heck , id even try decent pointed / field pointed as well . Thet tend to do well in slower fps stuff i use..

So far the most accurate are norica lead wadcuters, but I also am thinking of ordering some light copper pellets. Are light pellets generally better for low powered guns?

I would stick with standard weight and domes or wad cutters, whatever proves most accurate is the way to go. You don’t have much power so you better be able to put em where it counts. In the US I would suggest Crosman hollow point domes as they are cheap and some have good results with them.

Its what i can easy local buy and economical that give me best results..

Like said for me its the crosman hp's. I can zip in to Walmart grab some and shoot.. ones i cant are cheap daisy pointed , e gads. Just bad in my stuff..

The crosmans i shoot pretty much exclusively 10m to 100 y just fine ..

I guess if your overseas it what you got and can do ..

It is nice, looks and feels like good quality, but it is pretty weak

I thought I would get more penetration power with lighter pellet, like copper? Why is lead better?

Your velocity isn't that far off from my 30S. I'm getting about 8fpe give or take with lead JSB 8.44gr pellets and have take squirrels at 25yds with it. Its all about shot placement with these low velocity/energy guns.

You said 10-15 meter range and the gun is a up to 600 fps you say.

The tipped pellets should do fine but like gamos red fires aint economy pellets . Here its like $8 for 150 count... Ouch.

Try crosman destroyer or just the crosman field points. Id just feel the crosman field pointed should do all you ask in that gun for what you said your going to shoot easy... imho.

Also there more domed then pointed . Funny the pictures of them like at crosman show them very pointed looking and there not ..

Anyway try all you can and pick the best for your needs and groupings..

Yeah, the price is a big factor also...domestically I can buy only 2 types of pellets, norica and some german company. Everything else I need to order off ebay or amazon and that`s going into 30-40 euro range for 100-150 pellets, with the postage and everything...thats really too much. I think I will stick to what`s available here.

A good pellet is the most accurate pellet in your rifle. Clean the crap out of the barrel, shoot a couple hundred pellets to break the rifle in (tin cans are perfect fodder). Place a target at the average shooting distance and shoot a couple of groups with each available pellet. Which ever shoots the best, use that one. To make pest control easier, use a bait at the best shooting distance.

There are a ton of pesting videos on youtube. Find a person doing the same kind of pesting you are and start taking notes on how they rock and roll. I saw a video where the shooter figured out the rats liked one kind of cat food and he cleaned house with it.

Biggest thing is ethical kills to me. Practice makes perfect and goes a long way in clean dispatches. I put paper targets up at 5 yard intervals to figure out where my rifles shoot. Always aim at the bullseye to see how much the arch of the shot is at that distance. Practice or write it down, easy to do and well worth the time.

Springers shoot like an arrow or a rainbow. The pellet leaves the barrel going upwards in trajectory towards the target. Close targets you have to hold under to hit. Long targets you have to aim over. Have fun!
