Newbie. Optics for FX Impact. Need a help!

Well I have a different point of view. Compared scopes side by side. Comparable prises and magnification on a resolution board. I can't purchase $1000's scopes at one time. I do own 2 pcp's but I have shot over 5000 varmints in the last 3 months and my choice is NighrForce. I'm 72 years old and can see .17 holes at 100 yards with weaver 6x24 Grand slams om powder burner rimfires. I'm still on the fence on 1st or 2nd FP scopes as I use both but leaning to the first because in high volume varminting you don't have time to calculate hold over at different power settings, it's point, WAG distance, think hold over, hold over on mildot and windage all in a few second and fire. Next scope will be 20-30x top end and FFP. JMO

NF 7-35's have a reputation for having great glass! From what I've read they are superior to most scopes including the Razor which has very good glass but definitely not top tier glass.

I've looked through both but haven't owned either. I liked the NF 7-35 a lot and as a matter of fact it's the scope I'd go to if I sold one of my S&B 5-25's, and half the reason is they focus down to 10Y. I thought the Athlon Cronus I owned had better glass than the Razor I was peering through but these are just impressions and we all see things differently??!!

There are quite a few S&B 5-25 PM2's that turn up in the classifieds over at Snipershideforums if you want to save money buying used and aren't picky about which reticle you have. They focus down to 10M. Saw them go for as little as $2100 and these are upwards of $4000 brand new.

March FX 5-40x56 is another contender which my wife owns. It's very nice and focuses down to 10Y.

It seems like from what I read that the differences in these price spheres are rather small, and often (not always) an issue of personal preference.... —

one abhors chromatic abberations, so that's the measuring stick they measure excellent scopes with —

another craves brightness above all else (if all else is at least "very good") — so they have a different measuring stick.

And both say "the best glass!" about different scopes....

Just sayin'.... 😊

I have a Razor HD on my PRS rig and a Vortex Golden Eagle on my Impact. I have lots of other scopes and would never knock one of the top tier Nightforce scopes, I’ve used many of them and they’re phenomenal! There are many different Razor scopes... Razor, Razor HD, Razor HD Gen. II. You pay $1000, you’re going to get good glass! I’m a FFP guy but completely fell in love with the a Golden Eagle 15-60x52mm which is SFP. You can see .25 holes a long ways away! I use a rangefinder all the time with my air guns anyway so SFP is fine. Check it out! You can get one new for $1499 or used on EBay for about $1100-$1200. Lifetime warranty still applies.

Thank you all guys for your help! I really appreciated it! I am very glad that I finally dared to register here. I asked questions at the Russian-speaking gun forum and did not receive an answer for weeks! Thanks to you i finally made my choice - NightForce ATACR 7-35x56mm FFP. Now I have a different dilemma- Reticle Mil-C or Mil-R? ( i more tilted to the Mil-R, looks there is a thicker lines in case of close range). May you share you thoughts about it with explanations pls

That’s a great choice, I’m sure you’ll love it. As Steve already mentioned, reticle choices are vast and everybody seems to like different ones for different reasons. It really depends how you’ll use it and at what magnification you’ll use it most often. The mil c has a floating dot I believe, which many people like a lot, especially when magnification is cranked up. Some reticles have a lot of hash marks and ranging lines, some don’t, a lot depends if you’ll actually use them or not and what you like. Keep in mind with FFP scopes, high magnification equates to heavier, thicker lines and hash marks which some find obtrusive and distracting, especially at 35x. That’s a big reason I suggested the Golden Eagle SFP, at 40x, 50x or evening 60x, the reticle remains pretty thin throughout the zoom range. Good luck with your decision, let us know what you decide!

$2499 illuminated 4.5-27x56 34mm has a 32 yard to infinity but can shoot close range backing the power 4.5-10x for hunting. No brainer puts the NF behind. This thing is so bright and clear you won't believe it. Yo!

Yo,

You have a lot of experience with scopes so I wanted to know what you would recommend if I too am using it for a FX Impact MK2 power plenum in .357 and in .25 for plinking/targeet 70% and 30% hunting but if I wanted to spend less than the Vortex and wanted to keep the cost of the scope more like $500 to $800 or if possibly a little more but definitely less than $1k? I was wondering about the Athlon scopes?

The Golden Eagle 15-60x how close does that one focus? I have never personally looked through one of those yet. Is it clear all the way to 60x? If so then I guess there's no need for a spotting scope. Yo!

The GE focuses to 20 yards. It is a great scope. One of my favorite SFP scope because of quality and price. Can get them from $1000-1200 (used-new).

OP - Great choice. I’m not sure how I missed this thread and wasn’t able to offer advice before you purchased, but you made a good call if you have the money. If I only had one rifle and one scope, it would be the NF ATACR 7-35... and it was when I had one... the only reason I still don’t have it is that I sold it to buy more rifles and more scopes. I have tried many scopes from many brands, and the ATACR is easily my favorite scope. Is it overkill? Sure, but to my eye, I’ve never owned a better scope. Something with my eyesight also makes it hard for me to dial in an accurate balance between reticle and target focus with some scopes. The ATACR never had that issue a single time. The ATACR and a S&B PMII are the two most expensive scopes I’ve owned and I would definitely choose the ATACR first between those. The Athlon Cronus would actually be my next choice after the NF once I start balancing quality and price. The thing I don’t like about the Vortex Razor HD is the size. It is a monster. I am looking to possibly try out the NX8 to see what it is like, but I don’t expect it to be a ATACR.

Smok3y, thanks for your opinion, especially for tip about Athlon Cronus, i’ll keep it in mind! Before found this wonderful forum, I was in some kind of information vaacum about my hobby and, of course, made a lot of mistakes, including- I bought a NF SHV 4-14x50mm F1 for small game hunting / bench resting 100 yd+ but for neither one nor the other, it is not suitable because of the low magnifications

I personally would recommend the $599 BUSHNELL Elite TAC 4.5-30x50 SFP Mildot 25 yard min focus. You won't find a better scope than this one without having to pay more than double its price. Buy it from SWFA. They used to cost DOUBLE THIS PRICE. MADE IN JAPAN LIFETIME WARRANTY. I recently bought TEN of these. Couldn't pass up $599 Price. Yo!
