Sooo My roomie got a Daisy Red Ryder, A Christmas Wish of course. Cute little thing, right. 650 capacity, 350fps, cool little rifle.
That got me jones'n so I got a Crosman M4 (instead of the Pumpmaster). 350 capacity, 350-700fps totally Awesome.

Started thinking what's more accurate with a BB... A smooth barrel or a rifled barrel?

Welcome. This is a great forum with lots of knowledgeable and helpful members. My favorite pumpers WERE my old Sheridan blue streak .177 and a crosman pump master 760 .177. Sadly I don’t have any pumpers anymore only spring piston. Both of my old pumpers had blown seals and I threw them out. I didn’t know they could be repaired back then. I haven’t gotten any pumpers because the new plastic ones don’t do anything for me, although I am interested in the new drangonfly. I have looked around at a couple older 760’s and blue streaks, still kicking myself for not buying them.

I saw a review of the new Crossman 760 with a smooth bore barrel by Tom Gaylord, the guru of airguns. I believe he saw no real difference in accuracy in pellets and bbs in that smooth bore gun and accuracy was not that good. I think he got his best group with the H&N smart shot which no longer made. I did see another comparison review of the Crossman 760 smoothbore and a Daisy 880 with rifled barrel. In this review the Crossman shot better. I have a button rifled older model 761Xl (same rifle as a 760 but this is all metal and wood construction). I did not shoot BBs in it yet but with pellets it shot quarter size groups at 20 yards.(see below). I bought the newest model of the Crossman 760 and it shot 1.5" groups with BBs and pellets so my rifled 761XL is definitely better with pellets. . If I get a chance I will compare the 2 guns with BBs. I will not shoot many bbs thru my 761XL as I believe it will degrade my rifling. My 760 will be my short range bb tin can plinker.

Do not shoot steel BBs in your rifled barrel. Use only lead BBs or maybe dust devils. Steel BBs will ruine the rifling in the barrel.

Welcome. Forty years ago as a teenager I had a Crosman 766 with a rifled barrel. I'd shoot erasers off pencils at fifteen yards but BBs were probably around half to three quarters of an inch. I figured the rifling caused a spinning BB. Sort of like a screwball or curve ball. Definitely not a scientist but I don't think rifling adds any stability to a spherical projectile.

For me BBs were great for punching through things like stockade fences and galvanized garbage pails. They were cheap and fun. I saved pellets for accurate pesting. That they did well.
