New to the Forum... Looking for advice

Dr Gunner

I've had a lot of air rifles over the last 5 years, and just tried a .22 Gamo Urban at the end of last year. Would have kept it if I didn't have so many rifles already. But I was impressed with this little entry level rifle that I recommend to most who want to dip into PCP game.

It's a great feeling rifle for offhand shooting if that's what you need. Only weighs 6.7 pounds. Can't beat the price either. You'll find it on sale most anywhere. I bought mine on sale at Walmart last year for just $200 ! I Should have kept it for a loaner?

Steve did a great video on it.

Also plenty of nice used guns out there. Which is why I sold the Gamo to buy 2007 model FX Logun Solo.

I know this is a little above your price range, but you can't go wrong with this little cat from Ken Hicks. I just ordered a really nice used FX 500 from him. I buy more used than new guns and I've gone through over 25 airguns in the last 5 years.

Good luck and I'm thinking you will be pleasantly surprised!

Might you be a CMP member? Worth a glace either way:

Not being sure if yo0u are wanting to compete in airgun silhouette ( so airgun rules apply) or just more practice with a pre-charged - or other, an SSP can be outstanding.

Has an adjustable comb (can set it all the way down just for practice but maybe not for "riles) but the Crosman Challenger was made just for waht you want to do.

https://www.crosman.com/challenger-pcp-rifle-with-sights-177 and hopefully the agnation discount would work, don't forget free shipping friday.

The CZ aka AA 200 is an outstanding rifle. And, CZ is/has stopped production of all airguns ( no worries on parts tho) so if interested DO grab one fast.

Now IMO the very best advice is get with some other airgun folks. Well worth a drive to the nearest macth , FT, BR,other ! Failing that do find a local airgunner, most will be more than happy to have you shoot what they own and you'll have such a better idea of everything. If your near 99109 stop on by.

CampFussel- Thanks for the suggestions. I will add those to a growing list of rifles that I have been compiling since starting this thread. At this point, I’m thinking that a low budget entry level rifle and hand pump or used scuba tank might be the better way to go for me.

I knew that PCPs were a fast growing sector of the airgun sports, but I had no idea to what degree and how many excellent choices would be available to me in this endeavor.

Going with an inexpensive starter will allow me to get some hands-on practice and decide what my long term needs will be. I need to determine whether I will simply keep things as I have done, replacing my springer with a basic but effective sporter PCP to practice my pre-existing hobby of smallbore silhouette, or if I will dive headfirst into airgun silhouette, at which point I would definitely make the appropriate investment in a $1K+ rifle.

The one obvious perk to me, is that I already have optics covered. I also have adequate room on my property to double or even triple my current target distance.

spysir- No, I am not a member of the CMP.

Ive been to Camp Perry, but that was many years ago. Your advice is spot- on... I need to research air gun matches in my area and perhaps attend a match or two. I hear what you were saying about shooters sharing equipment, I proudly hand my rifles to perfect strangers at matches. I see that as paying it forward and paying it back because so many have done the same for me in the past.

As I said above, at this point I’m thinking low budget entry level. I have an 11-year-old daughter who is very much into shooting sports and a 13-year-old son who is also a shooter, not as avid as my daughter. Anything that I acquire will not gather dust.

To everyone who has responded to this thread – thank you very much for the warm welcome and information. It seems I have quite a bit to digest, quite a few links to follow and rifles to read about.

I’ll ask another question –

Of the vendors that you guys frequent, can you post a list of reputable dealers? I’d like to see if I can find any that might post the weight of a given rifle in the specifications listings.

Regards,

DrGunner
