However the wood stock Avenger is like $375 out the door right now at PA. Even comes with a free case.

I personally really like Hatsan. You can get a lot of performance for the price. This is especially true if you are willing to tinker around with it a little. If you go to the Hatsanusa.com website then go to the refurb section, you can see some really good deals. You can get an AirTact for $49.99. I have one in 177 and one in 22 and they both work great. There are videos on youtube on how to improve the trigger. I have purchased three different refurb break barrel rifles and each one came to me in pristine condition, I could not tell that they were refurbs
Some have commented that a lower powered gun will likely give you better accuracy and I agree with them. I shortened the piston spring by cutting 8 coils off the spring that came with the gun and I brought the power down to 12 FPE. The shot cycle became really smooth, and the accuracy is excellent. A properly tuned AirTact will give you all the power and accuracy that you need for small game out to 30-40 yards. Best of all, all of my Hatsans work great using Crosman pellets.
I personally really enjoy working on my Hatsans just because it is fun to take something so inexpensive and bring the performance way up. A refurb is a good way to go since you know that the gun has been looked at before being sent out.
There are much nicer guns for sure, I'm the type of person who starts at entry level just to see if I am likely to enjoy a new hobby.

I never had much luck with Hatsan myself but they can be okay. In the under $500 springer market Diane is another one I would look at like maybe a 460 or a 350 magnum.

I started out with a very powerful inexpensive springer that was a complete disappointment and basically useless.
I was trying to get a chipmunk infestation under control and after whittling down a few I realized there must be a better rifle.
I went for a .25 Marauder and a hand pump and was blown away by the accuracy.
I was also instantly hooked and addicted to PCP shooting, so watch out
I don’t have the Marauder anymore, but I have a couple RedWolves and a couple FX rifles. And that’s not all…
The Marauder served me well, it would handle the critters you would be dealing with and you could sell it and get some money back if you want out. Just get ready for the rabbit hole they all talk about here, it’s real and very deep lol!

Check out the Benjamin Akela .22. Accurate rifle for the price if you like the bull-pup style gun.
