New Superior Liner in My FX Impact MKII

I’m pretty burnt out on testing slugs in my Impact. It’s a long, slow process to tune a gun properly for slugs. When the testing involves nearly 100 different slugs, from 7-8 different makers that all have different design characteristics and weights, tuning the gun over and over and over, never seems to end. I learned a lot about slugs and FX liners, what works and what doesn’t but by the end of the process I decided to give it a rest for a while. My boys don’t like to watch me tune my gun over and over, so if I want them to go shoot with me, we need to fun shoot or hunt!

The other day I saw a post on AGN from Tony at Talon Tunes letting us know that he had a whole bunch of Superior liners in stock. I though, I’ll buy one and then when I’m ready, I’ll test it out with the slugs I have left over and see if it really is better than the standard slug liner. I ordered it Saturday and it arrived yesterday. From Florida to Nor Cal in two days. Needless to say, when I got it I was excited about it. I cleaned it really well and installed it in my Impact almost immediately!

First thing this morning, the boys and I were at the range testing it out. I didn’t want to go full steam ahead with the slug testing so I started out with the FX 34gr, the JSB 33.95 MKI & MKII pellets. They all shot pretty well but the MKII shot the best by far, without having to change my tune at all. The slug liner I had in the gun before changing it out, preferred the MKI’s. Another thing that I found interesting is that the FX and MKII’s pellets shot a little differently even though, everything about them looked exactly the same...the head, shape, skirt shape and depth, everything was almost identical, except the accuracy. At 50yds, the MKI shot a 15/16” group, the FX a little under 5/8” and the MKII a tiny little 3/8” group. All were 5 shot groups, I didn’t deduct the diameter of the pellet from group size, and groups were shot in a 5-10mph variable breeze. I did not do any tuning, this was just an initial test to get an idea of the liner’s accuracy and see what pellets showed the most promise. All of the pellets were shooting between 925-950fps. When I tune the gun for these pellets, one at a time, I’ll start at the max of 970fps and decrease the velocity until I get down to around 870fps. Once I check the gun’s accuracy with each pellet, throughout the velocity range, I’ll dial in the gun to the velocity that shoots best and then fine tune with the regulator, hammer spring and valve adjuster.

Although I got a little long winded as usual, the real reason I am writing this post is to see what slugs you guys have used with your 700mm, .25 caliber Superior liner to achieve the best result? I know there was a post showing great results with the NSA 33.5gr at something like 865fps. I know there are a ton of variables and I also know that no two barrels shoot exactly alike. I just wanted to get a basic idea of what brands, weights and velocities seem to work the best for you so I don’t have to start from scratch and test every slug I own. I have a lot of slugs left over and I don’t want to test them all. Out of curiosity, I shot a few slugs by VK, AVS, NSA and Griffin today. All were in the 29-32 grain range. One of the biggest surprises was the Griffin 30gr DB. I’ve had absolutely no luck with that slug at all, but out of the superior liner, the group was very small and consistent. Again, no tuning was done at all. I just grabbed some slugs and shot them to see what would happen. I think depending on what kind of information I receive here, I might just grab 3 slugs from each manufacturer between 28 and 30 grains, tune the gun for that weight window and then fine tune the gun for each slug as I go. I also have 500 FX Hybrids coming to test. Normally I wouldn’t want to shoot a slug that light, it kind of defeats the purpose, but I can probably drop my regulator to about 115bar and still sling the hybrids at well over 1000fps. We’ll see I guess, it will totally depend on accuracy. I would love to have the Superior liner shoot like my slug liner, except more accurately. With the slug liner I can shoot the VK 32.8 gr. slug and JSB MKI with very little change in POI out to 75yds. After that, I have the drop for both on my turret so I can use either at any time. It works great for all of my shooting needs!

Any info on your favorite slugs and velocities out of the Superior liner would be of great help to me and save me a lot of time narrowing down which slugs to test out. Thanks in advance. Have. great afternoon.

Stoti

Hi Stoti, I am shooting an impact mk2 25cal 700mm I have been shooting this gun for exactly one year, no power plenum. I have the gun tuned on max@910-920 FPS with nsa 36.2 slugs, shoots so well that I cannot picture the shooting better! I have been reading a post that I believe that was from YO about shooting at slower speeds for more energy retention factors. Well I turned down my power wheel to #4 and it is still moa accurate, but when I chrony the shots I was stunned it was @820fps not just accurate but quiet and more calm as far as hold sensitive. I have noticed the slugs impact on the game seems to be very effective on the energy of the slugs moving slowly effected them more. That’s all l have got .

Bringing this back up....I have a new 600 superior liner along with power plenum/block/pin probe upgrade in my older .25 MKI impact so the power is there now at only 120bar. JSB 34gr MKI shoot great at around 880. Wondering if anyone has tried the ZAN 34gr slugs thru this liner? I imagine I can get them over 900 pretty easily as I am at setting 3 on the hammer spring for the 34gr JSB's. Is 34gr about the limit for the standard STX superior before needing to go to the superior heavy??

Thanks,

DT

I commend you for jumping back on the wagon, although cautiously, after experiencing burnout. I too have experienced the burnout and currently have my own battle going on. I’ve had a Superior heavy sitting ready to go. All six pieces screwed and glued together just in case my current barrel project didn’t work out. After a ton of hours testing and machining, the barrel did work out. And it’s quite shocking. But this fool just can’t shake the urge to test that heavy. I took the time to machine a barrel to get away from these six piece things and yet I still want to test it. But like you I’ve changed my approach. I won’t test it until my current setup makes me mad. And I’ve been trying. Today it got calm so I kept poking my setup with a stick. But as I was shooting deer turds off the snow at 167 yards, I just won’t touch my gun. Back on topic. When i was playing the liner game with my .25 the only advice I can give is the slug recipe can dictate what diameter will shoot better. I’m a 600mm guy and I know that my 500mm Impact is a completely different animal than my 600mm. Not much translates between the two. So that’s why the only thing I can pass along is the size thing. Example: With a NSA you might need a .249 but with an AVS you might need a .2513.

I can relate to your frustration with slugs.
I tried the heavy and fast 22 slugs and got tired of the effort, went back to pellets to regain my sanity then decided to try lighter slugs.
I do not have an Impact in 25 but do have a Crown MKII in 600mm 25. Standard liner and it shoots NSA 26.? Gr .249 slugs so well that I wont touch it again. Also, shoot light for caliber (23 gr Zan .218) out of my M3 600mm gun. I have no desire to shoot heavy slugs any more. The light ones still out perform pellets for distance and wind resistance and deliver better terminal performance over pellets.
An FX liner is an FX liner no matter what gun it is in.
