New Scope or Not (Hawke vs Athlon)

I have heard via an old timer that at least one Hft competitor was permanently escorted off the course when it was discovered that he had modified the magnification ring to indicate a lower mag than he was actually using… sigh…..
As I understand it you can lower your magnification for standing or kneeling shots and then return it to 16X after but you must announce your intention

I have also heard of a handful of similar situations. In the most recent one that I'm aware of, the cheaters switched shooting sports, and have been quite active in their new one.

I’m relatively new to HFT and would appreciate help/suggestions purchasing a new scope. I currently have a .177 Daystate Revere with a Hawke Airmax 30 WA SF 6-24x50 Mrad. The rifle is great and I’m satisfied with the scope. HOWEVER, based on what I’ve read on this and other forums, I’m wondering if an Athlon Heras SFP 6-24x50 1/10 Mrad with the APRS7 reticle would be an improvement over the Hawke from a quality of optics standpoint? Or would I be just as well off or maybe better off, working on technique?
Another question. With the exception of the Hawke all the other scopes I own are MOA. I don’t currently shoot or plan to shoot NRL or other long range games. Since HFT limits a scope to 16x and does not allow clicking to adjust for range, doesn’t the difference between MOA and Mrad become a moot point? I’d appreciate your comments. Thanks, Tom
You are completely correct here. I used to shoot NRL and MIL was everything and FFP. Now im all about SFP and don't care what measurement system as its irrelevant. Just making sure it has the other features I need. SFP is cheaper and MOA is cheaper (MIL is more popular) so sometimes you can find deals. Stick with what you have for now. Look thru others scopes for awhile and see what people are shooting.
Ill tell you this, the cheaper Athlon range great in sunlight but not in shade. The Hawke Sidewinder series seems to hold great in all conditions. For Hunter class I dont see a need to spend more than that $650 price for a good quality scope. There are plenty of options there and under. Spend the time perfecting your ranging and dope and accuracy.

Never and I hope it stays that way.

I've found the best way to avoid tasers is moderating the alcohol, crack and heroin intake... while driving.

But the best way to minimize the effects of taser is excessive alcohol, crack and heroin intake. Then if feels kinda like tickling...

Only different. Much like the video below, starting at the 27 second mark-

If you buy the second focal plane version- yes! But the FFP version reticl will be very tiny at 16X

I'd go for that Heras SFP 6-24 or the FFP Ares BTR G3 2.5-15.

The reticle in this Ares is THICKER than most FFP scopes and the quality is outstanding.
It likely ranges as good at 15x as most scopes do and the IQ is nice.
It's a higher grade scope than the Heras line too (since I have a 2-12 and a 4-20 to compare with) and well you get the picture.
I haven't been this impressed with a scope in a long time!
Stick with the Heras, as much as I like my Ares 2.5-15, it doesn’t range nearly as well as the Heras 6-24x56 SFP. This picture is self explanatory 🤦‍♂️

If its the same person, it wasn't the scope modification that got him the lifetime ban, it was messing with power levels prior to and after the chrony lane at a Nationals match. That was an interesting squad to be in that day...

I wouldn't describe it as 'interesting'. Although I'd only met him the day before in the first rifle match of the 2009 FT Nationals, he was easy to not like; as everyone that had the misfortune of knowing or even just meeting him agrees.

Being that he was first and I was second place in Hunter Rifle class after the first match, we were squadded together in the second match (along with third place). He ended up "beating" me by two points on the weekend.

Only almost a decade later did I learn information confirming he cheated by using a scope modified to magnify 22-24X when set to the 12X factory marking. Yes, I have proof of those facts.

Then at 2015 Nats he cheated me out of a second Hunter Rifle National Champion title; that time by using an over the power-limit rifle. We actually tied, then he "won" the shoot-off. I don't need proof of how he cheated that time, because the next year he used the same rifle (at 2016 Natts) to cheat the same way, was exposed, and permanently banned from American Field Target.

Thats why my 2009 and 2015 Hunter Rifle Second Place plaques (the two rightmost below) are in reality National Champion titles.

For all I know he also cheated me out of more than the one Hunter Pistol title (the plaque on the left above). But since I have no proof, I won't accuse him of that. Nevertheless...

🤬!!!

I really like the spacing and size of the Airmax reticle. It’s not too busy, if you know what I mean. Which one, if any, of the reticles available in the Heras comes closest to the Airmax? Thanks, Tom
I haven’t owned a airmax, but I’ve owned several Hawkes and a second focal plane Athlon is much better in my opinion

I can sympathize, but you misunderstood that comment.

I was squadded with him and Bob for day one at the Michigan Nationals. Bob had taken a bunch of images and called my attention and the chrony lane attendant's attention to the fact that he reduced his power level prior to the chrony lane. He could have shot the chrony lane on his first mark on the adjuster label (where it was for the previous lanes) but he refused and removed the label before we got to the next lane. I felt inclined to write Leo after the match, the matter was settled by giving him the boot for the final time.

Day two was funny as hell. I was squadded with Mike and Lonnie and he was a lane over. At the kneeling lane he took it seated and nobody was telling him he was in a kneeling lane. He would knock over the target and the scorer would say "miss" and he was getting all pissed off. I think it took two or three shots before he realized he was shooting seated in a kneeling lane. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

I've been subject to losing a first place award to someone shooting over the power limit when I was struggling with accuracy under the power limit (we had the same unregulated rifles shooting 22cal), no point in having rules if they are not enforced.

He should have been booted and his victories vacated for every single match he attended for that first infraction, you should have received a new Nationals plaque and sent yours to the next person in line. That may seem harsh but the enormity of the infraction (re-gutting a scope) called for a permanent ban without a doubt. A complete and total failure of that AAFTA administration.

People think cheating victories are hollow, a lot of people cheat to win, there must be something there seeing the lengths to which these people go...sometimes it seems more work to cheat than to just get better. But I guess if you really suck, cheating is pretty much your only means to a win. Once you are that far gone the win probably means something different than to those who are honest. We see it as hollow, I have the feeling they grasp on to it like its everything in the world, the hollow filled with lies. They do it because it means something to them to win that way. Play just about any online video game these days and you'll come across as many cheaters as non-cheaters. Its hollow to us, there is something there for them, what 'that' is I have no idea... But then again we call a lot of things what they are not today, people can make themselves believe anything they want no matter how hollow or unrealistic it seems to the rest of us. The measure of us is how far we let them go before we demand it stop.

Thank you for filling in a few more details for me, JW.

I emailed the BoG demanding they retroactively DQ the guy from every FT match he shot, and send an email to every club advising them of that and to consider everyone that ever finished behind him in a match to consider themselves one place higher, and correct the records accordingly. However the BoG decided against any further action than the ban.

It is what it is, now. Thanks again.
